Wild Mage Woes
Wild Mage Woes
Hello, everyone.
I've just started on my mage only party the other day and have currently recruited Aerie, Jan, and Kelsey (will get Edwin and Imoen). I'm playing as a wild mage (already had a cow dropped on myself a few times; also demons gated in) and plan on playing without reloading regardless of the outcomes of my wild surges. So when I had a sex change and became a white-haired woman in the middle of the government district, I just had a laugh and continued to play, thinking that I would eventually change back somehow--possibly another wild surge. After resting my character found himself back to his old bearded self and I went on with other quests afterwards. Well I kept going until I got to the Copper Coronet and had Aerie talk to the elven womanizer (forgot his name), and was surprised when she got no banter... and looked on the character screen to find that "she" was a male. My stray fireball must have hit myself and Aerie-->wild sex changes... I have my mages stoneskinned and robed; kinda hard to tell at times. I've had a few talks with her after the encounter, andI was just wondering if there is a way to change her back (she didn't change back like my pc did) into a woman, and whether this would have an effect on any romances/dialogues/etc. Or I'll just have to keep playing with Aerie as a male...

I would undoubtedly prefer the former...or the latter.

I don't believe it will affect the romance if it is already started. There is a variable called AerieMatch which will be set to 1 if you are able to have a romance with her and I am pretty sure this check is only made once, when you first add her to the party.
The only way to change her gender would be to cheat in a Girdle of Masculinity/Femininity ("BELT05"). Or you could just use ShadowKeeper to change it manually.
But since you are committed to not reloading due to the affects of wild surges, I would just leave things as they are. The main attraction of wild mages seems to be the random element that they add to the adventure. (I would say that is the only attraction.) You just need to embrace the madness...

Resistance to Tyrants is Service to God.
Yes, madness is good. I'll have her wearing that girdle hoping for the improbable coincidence of another wild surge changing her back--or would it change it to male again? *sigh* Thanks for the reply.Originally posted by JackOfClubs

Well, that and the fact that Nahal's Reckless Dweomer is potentially the most powerful spell in the game, of course.

Of course, another item that acts about as random as a Wild Magic is the Wand of Wonder. The spell it casts is random, and you could hope to cast a fireball with it, but you'll suddenly cast Stinking Cloud spell on your own guys. Wierd.
I'll never forget gating in two demons in the prologue dungeon when I tried being a Wild Mage a couple years ago. So you can actually have a cow drop on your character? Wierd.

Wild Surges can cause a lot of funny stuff, including:
For a complete list see

"Targets's sex changed" can cause very weird results for creatures that don't have a male/female "counterpart", for example, a male Bodhi is a rabbit
- Caster's sex changed
- a cow dropping on your head
- party looses all gold (not very funny )
- summon a lot of squirrels
- Entire area explored
- All weapons in the area glow
- Target's sex changed

So what are some of the most beneficial wild surges? (just as an example)
I've read the manual before, but I'm afraid my eyes will pop out of their sockets from the small, tight and long print, literally.

One of the best possible results would be:
Cast Reckless Dweomer, wild surge is "Roll 4 times" (that means 4 wild surges occur)
1 : Spell fired. Caster also recuperated as if rested
2: Spell casts at double effectiveness
3: Spell affects all enemies in area of effect
4: -4 to target's saving throw
If this nearly impossible combination of wild surges would happen when you cast a Dragon's Breath for example, all enemies would individually be hit by a double damage Dragon Breath (and by the other Dragon Breathes (sp?) cast on the nearby enemies), their saving throws would be reduced by 4 and your mage has all his spells ready again... Almost impossible, but funny

*takes out a tape recorder* Note to self: make one of next BG1 characters be a mage to make into a Wild Mage.
Can Half-Elves and Elves become Wild Mages, or just Humans?
