End of Season Affective Disorder

Post by Minerva »

The domestic football season is over, and there's no big tornament during this summer. And it's bad for you.

If you are worried, check the followings:
Those close to football supporters should look out for signs of depression, lethargy, inability to converse and a feeling of hopelessness - feelings which may also be common during the season, if their team is not faring well.

Other symptoms of the 'disorder' may include an inability to focus, a lack of direction and irritability - which may also be seen during the season when attempts are made to distract a fan from a match.

Being "as sick as a parrot" is not listed as one of the symptoms.

Oh the poor people, next thing you know they'll be off the Stella and on to Pimms. I love our society when things like this come out, it warms my heart.

Isn't this because many "football fans" are basically rather thick?

They obsess over how *skilfully* a vulgar moron spits and kicks a ball around a piece of grass whilst they engage in a spot of hooligansim, assault and affray.

I detest football, footballs, footballers and anything to do with that pathetic and ridiculously unsporting excuse for a "game".

Why don't other sports have hooligan followers? You don't see it with cricket, rugby and racing.

Yeah, don't all flay me alive for this - I did say *many* football fans, not all. I just really really hate the way football has become such a big part of English life in recent years.

What's wrong with a football? What's it done to you, I swear it's kicked around all day and then it gets abuse too. Poor thing.

'Tis true, football has become a way of life for some people a religion almost, me I watch the occasional game and support my team in that I like to see them doing well, other than that I couldn't really give a toss and hooliganism has nothing what so ever to do with football in my opinion.

Come clean now Sleepy, you must be a thug and hooligan, you bloodthirsty football-loving brute you. :D

Admit it...when your team loses, you plot random, senseless beatings upon the fans of the team that defeated yours. ;) Perhaps you watch them with glowering, smoldering eyes as they go about their day, joyfully extolling the virtues of their team as they creamed yours into the grass. I am sure this summons a beastial rage somewhere deep within you, yes? :)

Er, don't you get news in Wales, Sleep? Don't you hear of English fans rampaging and rioting over Europe?

"Beautiful game"? Yeah, bollocks it is....

@Enchantress, football has been a big part of English life for more than a few years :) And the disgusting rabble you refer to that bring the reputation down with their thuggery were way more apparent in the 70s than today (We were banned for years from European games following the Eissel Stadium (sp?) disaster). That said, there are still many underground organisations that adopt the football shirt to get involved in the violence that exists outside of the game, this is a sad fact. They probably get their hype from the group hysteria of a game, then with their underground connections actually arrange meetings with rival supporters purely to get mean. These groups know who they are, and generally leave the innocent supporters alone - but not always. One thing that has been done to improve ground safety since the Hillsborough disaster (though to me it has killed the atmosphere of the game somewhat) has been to make grounds all seater (Taylor Report) this in turn has probably gone some way to curb violence at the grounds, since it is nowhere near as prevelant as it used to be. I recall clubs such as Luton and Millwall having electrified fences around their pitches to put of pitch invasions

On more than one occasion I have been to see my own team play a London club, and I have stood in the home stand in my own colours. Admittedly I exercise careful choice here, and accept that if I were male (or supported any other team than Wednesday :D ) I might get more than a friendly ribbing ;)

Yes, I agree with all you say, Yshania and I know you like football.

I guess I just have never seen the civilised side of the game and all the people around me, especially the male figures, like father, brother, boyfriends, etc, have not been football fans so I only associate it with the frightening thugs I see rampaging around on the tube after games in London.

Yes indeedy we do. I am not one to give much time to stereotypes...however, there is a particular sort of mentality that seems to fit many (not all, but many) fans of this gaudy, baudy, and rather dull spectacle. These somewhat primitive individuals argue incessantly on the job over who beat who, and why...and as the beer flows, often engage in brawls reminiscent of the steroid-booting lummoxes they idolize on the TV screen. :D

I can't play football without tripping over my own feet, but I support Newcastle, and I'm glad to say that the majority of the Geordie fans (and indeed, most of the Northern clubs) are a lot less prone to thuggery and hooliganism. I've found it's mainly Southern clubs, and in particular London teams that are the worse culprits... :(

Now, what other sport apart from rugby can you tackle the hell out of someone five minutes ago, and then meet them in the pub for a drink? Class... :D

Signed by the whole team? You mean every one of those loveable Geordie footballists could write their own name?! (*ducks and runs*)
