Chapter: End of Prologue
Level: 6
Game Clock: 1 day 5 hours
The LP's Comments:
I anticipated the start to be quite difficult, as clerics are not a natural melee class - and man, was I right. Aside from the humbling experience of having miss-fests and getting killed by goblins, I thought she did quite well. No doubt, I have to be patient with this character as the true power of the cleric only gets revealed at much higher levels. The hardest part so far were the Targos caves, mainly because my character was uber-green at that time and couldn't hit goblins even if they were tied down and drugged. As my level increased, it got considerably more manageable - also because I became more used to playing solo cleric. Verdict: nerve-wracking but fun.
Chiara's Journal:
It has been a long day.
Already, the light of the new morning filters through the frosted windows of the Salty Dog Tavern, mingling with the fading torchlight. The tavern is as silent and menacing as the promise of death that hangs over the beleaguered town of Targos.
Since I had set my eyes upon these smoke-clouded shores, my heart has been burdened by a nameless sorrow. Even after witnessing the ruin of Bremen, I was unprepared for the malice that greeted me upon my arrival in Targos. Scores of goblins wandered freely about the abandoned docks, looting and burning what they could not carry away. With Tempus as my guide I rid the shores of the goblins, fighting them through broken street and burnt house - even hunting them down in a series of old caves where they had been trapped.
I almost lost my life in those caves. The numbers of the twisted beasts beneath town were beyond my expectations. Luckily I had some skill in the crossbow - using the weapon I had found in the Galloway warehouse, I was able to slay the leaders of the goblin force from afar. But despite the demise of their captains, the goblins fought with the ferocity of the cornered and I was forced to resort to that which I know best - axe work. Many hours we fought in darkened passages until at last, with Tempus' blessing, I slew the last of them. From the ruined building I emerged - bloodied and exhausted - knowing that this was just the beginnning.
The grim day was not to end yet - a large force of goblin-kin assaulted the haphazard palisade the soldiers of Targos had hastily constructed. Unlike the tedious fighting earlier in the caves, this battle was glorious in its execution - waves of goblins battled openly with Targos' defenders, inexperienced yet hardened with the resolve of desperate men. In the end, even as I relieved the goblin mage Caballus' head from his shoulders, I knew this fight had come with a steep price. Many of those I had grown familiar with had lost their lives. Isherwood was cut off from the rest of us and slain by a rogue group of goblin archers. I had watched as Blanchard Pike succumbed to death upon a curved goblin blade. Of the Iron Collar Mercenaries, only Black Geoffrey remained - they had fought well, curing me of any misgivings I had of their ability.
I will honor the sacrifices of the slain by ridding the North of this horde. If by Tempus' grace I am still among the living then it is by his hand that I shall bring justice to Icewind Dale.
I shall set out with the morning to retake the caravan bridge at Shaengarne Ford. May Tempus grant me victory.

Crazy. This game does not play nice at all. Apparently the number of monsters spawned is not dependent on the difficulty setting but the level of your character - and since playing solo pulls your level up quite a bit, there were just about as many enemies as with my Heart of Fury game.
Glyphs of Warding are your friends - you can scoop up a good amount of enemies by running around and then tossing a glyph right in the center of them (this of course will not work if they are good at reflex saves). Anyway, the orcs at Shaengarne make lousy reflex saves (the Maralites and their animal buddies are good at this, though).
I also spent a lot of my fighting turning the opponents' spells against themselves - i.e. pulling them into their own entangles, rainstorms, webs.
Haft Over Head was especially useful against the later orc archers, since they widthdrew if you charged them - usually leading to more enemies. This is in contrast with the Broken Tusk archers who will engage you with their knives when you close in.
I was able to slip past the second layer of defense at the bridge by using a Sanctuary potion - never tried that before (mainly coz I never needed to). I was in pain while I was playing, but the challenge is peerless.
Also, it's funny how in the dialogue my character still refers to herself as 'we' (I guess the developers didn't mean for the game to be played solo).
Final Word: Very very difficult - I questioned my sanity many times, but I was still able to retake Shaengarne Bridge.
Journal:
I came to the bridge just before noon. The bright sun glared at me off the melting snow, outlining the milling forms of the horde creatures. After traveling for days through wasted land, battling orcs and lycanthropes, rabid animals and dark druids I was at last at my destination - the Shaengarne Bridge.
Its hulking form spanned the half-frozen river, wooden claws clutching the icy banks. Littered along the pathways were numerous crates and barrels, looted from caravans by the hordlings. Alerted to my presence by the destruction of the dam, the horde commanders had brought in motley units of monsters.
Had I come across such sight earlier I would have blanched at seeing such a terrifying assortment - but my time in the wilderness has changed me. More than the bronzed skin and the sharpened eyes, I have been altered. My spirit is truer to my purpose, my axe more ready to the task. Sadness and fear have been replaced by the determination to rid the land of these fiends.
And so I charged. With the sun on my blade and the strength of Tempus in my heart, I cleaved my path through the surprised horde beasts. Striking first at the ponderous bugbears, then at the rogue wizards I crippled their force before they could properly react. Fortune was with me as I was able to prevent the ogres from smashing the support beams and destroying the bridge.
When my wrath was stilled, and the horns of the horde blew no more I surveyed the fruits of Tempus' power - scores of shattered and lifeless bodies were strewn from the banks of the Shaengarne to the cold wintry passes leading to Targos. Such is the strength that has been lent to my limbs by my god.
With axe in hand, I make ready to return to the welcoming fires of Targos - and to my quest.

This stretch of game was much easier than I expected - it appears as though my character's power is growing faster than the difficulty - hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
I used more of the same tactics as last time: glyphs of warding, haft over head and good old slashing fun.
Some new stuff I did: used the enemies Agannazar's Scorcher against them - sweeping the flame over and over the goblins, found out that hardened ice trolls are weak against bludgeoning damage while hardened fire trolls are weak against slashing (never bothered to find out before - necessity is indeed the mother of invention), one of my favorite new techniques - cast divine shell so that i can't be interrupted, draw a huge crowd of enemies around me, unleash a circle of blades and scream 'blender!!' (no it doesn't work if you don't scream) - killed so many enemies that way, i was able to take out the first war drum by summoning a salamander across the chasm - his fire damage took out the drum pretty quick, so no worgs showed up.
Final Word: I've gotten more breathing room since last time, which always a good thing - hopefully Sherincal doesn't mop the floor up with me - on to chapter 2!!
Journal:
In the silence of the Salty Dog I find reprieve from my toils. I down the last of the Marsember Blush; its warmth tickles my cold throat. A relic of Targos, the wine serves as a reminder to me that my time here is at an end, already the Lord Ulbrec has sent me on another mission - this time to meet with the delinquent Neverwinter group.
I feel the fires that consumed the horde fortress still burning in me, their cruel tongues shine brightly in my eyes. As Braston and I fled from the ruin of the goblin keep, I kept thinking of the curse that Guthma uttered in despair as the roaring storm of the blades of Tempus took him and his cohorts from this earth. His twisted face damning me and his yet unknown masters to Bane. The meaningless and futility of his action struck me - a final attempt at the victory that had been wrested from him by the Lord of the Battleguard.
The souls of the slain may now rest easy in Targos, as their sacrifices have been vindicated, the evil that had taken their lives ended. Their blades shall forever shine brightly with Tempus' glory. And yet, despite my success my heart is unsettled. It is as if my quest has only begun. The masters Guthma spoke of are surely not ignorant of my actions, and until they too are defeated I fear my journey will remain long and treacherous.
Who are these beings that gather terrible forces and set them upon the innocent? The clue that may well unravel this mystery lies south in the person of the half-dragon Sherincal - and so while the strains of the song of battle still ring loudly I will seek out these 'masters' and I will have my answers.

Chapter: 2
Level: 15
Game Clock: 12 days 9 hours
Comments:
With all the large and dangerous creatures walking around the halls of the ice temple, I was a bit worried about this chapter. However, so far so good - like I anticipated, Haft Over Head (one of the main reasons I chose Battleguard of Tempus in the first place) proved to be invaluable against the Ice and Crystal Golems, because unlike the Remorhaz you can't just stand and hack away at them with an axe.
For the first time (in 4 full games of IWD) I was unable to intimidate Ilium. It didn't really matter as I had planned to slaughter them all for the Beladonna, I just found it curious. The Aurilites were no serious threat with the exception of Ilium and Odea - the latter I took out with a Power Word: Blind (plus axe action), the former I summoned a Scrag to wax him.
While her cohorts were useless, Sherincal was a pain. I could not damage her unless I got a critical hit (and we know how often those happen with axes). So I decided to play dirty - I headed over to Zack and had him buff me with Stoneskin and Fireshield. And that was the end of that.
Journal:
Ever since the crash I have been having these dreams - dark and heavy they crouch in my head lurking amidst my scattered thoughts. They infringe upon my sanity with their dread and chill my heart with terror. In them I am being pursued, by what - I do not know yet. At first I had believed it to be the work of my encounters with the Remorhaz - large blackened creatures that burned with deadly flames. Then I believed it to be my conscience haunting me with my slaughter of the scores of Aurilite rangers over the issue of passage. But in my heart I already knew that this evil that had set its will upon me was greater than the than the fickle bonds of conscience or the image of a mere beast. It plagues me, howling in a long unspoken tongue - the rage it exudes sweeps over me, threatening to drown me in its unbounded wrath. Anger is I what I feel in these dreams - fury.
I also know that this evil resides in the confines of the temple of ice. Many times have I gazed upon the intricate structure and marveled at its design. I have been fortunate enough to view its splendor at dusk, when the rosy light of the young night replicates itself in a vision of sheer beauty upon its icy panels and towering bastions. Alas, the beauty of the temple lies only its sterile facade - for its heart is corrupt and tainted, its followers lost to evil.
Many times as I have lain in rest upon the makeshift pallet amidst the ruin of Oswald's airship, I have questioned the hand that has brought me to this desolation. The shattered hull and the heavy curtains of the broken craft do little to keep out the chill of the air. But I know that Tempus has a purpose for me here - and I feel that that purpose is the cleansing of this haven of dark magic, if only to speed my return to my home. My path is unclear, but I have faith that the light of Tempus' justice will show me the way.

I don't really have that much time to write my stuff right now, lots of schoolwork is piling up (it's the week before finals).
Anyway, on to a quick summary: nothing surprising in the second stretch of the ice temple, since the monsters were basically the same - I actually didn't sweep the 1st level of the temple since the aurilites didn't give me experience anymore. I did go and hunt down all the golems since they still had some experience in them. I also let the abishai take care of all those I didn't kill. On the other hand I carefully cleared out the second level just to make sure that they didn't reinforce oria when i fought her.
I went up the third level of battle squares but then stopped coz it was beginning to bore me and i decided i had used enough potions.
Journal:
Within the very center of the ice temple I battled my nightmare, a whirling being of pure rage - a demon to taint the hearts of the Aurilites and drive them to serve the Destroyer's will. Invoking its name, I cast it from this realm and from my mind.
Free of the corrupt spirit, I was able to aid the druid Nathaniel in destroying the massive glacier of ice that stood between me and the northern regions. I shall continue on ahead while Oswald and Nathaniel finalize repairs on the grounded airship.
May Talos keep me while I recover my mind's strength.

Chapter: End of 3
Level: 20
Game Clock: 20 days 12 hours
Comments:
I haven't been able to play this past few days due to the fact that I have tons of stuff to do for school. I actually finished Chapter 3 a couple of days back, but I was too busy to type the stuff up.
Anyway, Chapter 3 is the shortest chapter (probably because Chapter 5 is ridiculously long) so I go through it pretty quickly - the is an inordinate amount of traveling, though, and that inflates your game clock.
The Fell Wood quests were pretty routine, and I didn't waste time fighting the spawned monsters in that area since they didn't give me any experience.
Limha was pretty easy since once I came out of the tent I hit her with a Power Word: Stun and that was the end of that. Since my level was quite high, her initial summon produced a truckload of trolls but that wasn't too hard to handle.
The treants didn't pose any problems, as I came in got them all with a Power Word: Blind and then a single firestorm which did them all in.
The trolls in the cold marshes were easy too since I just decoyed them with a bunch of summons and then hit them with firestorm until they wept.
As for the barbarians and their gate of stone, I generally just weakened them by running them into their own shamans' circle of blades and then axing them to death.
The white dragons were surprisingly easy as well - I split four level 7 summons out and then went head to head with them with the following buffs: divine shell and champion's strength. They didn't give me any experience though - my level's just too high for the particular part of the game I am in. In fact the only experience I've been getting are from the quests.
The hook horrors in the caves were easily funneled through the many passages there, and as for the jellies a couple of well-placed fire spells took them out really quickly.
I also decided to take out the duergar barracks after I finished the river caves quest so I basically summoned a bunch of level 7 and level 9 creatures and then used the divine shell-champion's strength combo - and that made quick work of them.
For Beastlord Harshom, I did pretty much the same stuff I've been doing throughout - I hit his entire group with a Power Word: Blind (works like a charm) and then one firestorm did the trick.
It's been going quite smoothly game-wise since I already have access to all my spells (think level 9 summons) and the Battleguard's domain spells are the bomb - PW: Kill, Stun and Blind. My divine shell is really useful now that it last for 20 rounds, and that also helps considerably. So there, I am glad I had planned before I started this solo quest (by reading up on all the different kinds of clerics, and listing the equipment I planned on using). Also, picking Battleguard of Tempus was a good idea since they are well-suited to soloing. I also think that Demarch of Mask would also be a good class to solo.
Another note, the Power Words probably won't work in Heart of Fury because the enemies have ridiculous amounts of hit points, but right here in normal (where the hit points are standard for D&D, which is what the PWs were designed for anyway) they work really well.
Alright, I probably won't be able to play today (like in the last 2 days) but once I can, it's on to the Black Raven Monastery for me. Hopefully I can manage the Chambers.
I will probably post the journal later today, sorry it's late but this week's been uber-hectic.

That's way tougher than what I'm doing now - good luck!
Journal:
These past few days I have seen more than I can recount. My journey from the ice temple took me along the twisted paths of the Fell Wood past the barren fields of the Cold Marshes and through the damp darkness of the River Caves.
I have battled corrupted treants, ghostly lights and frost-wielding dragons. My tired body longs for the comforts of a warm hearth and the company of a good bottle of wine. But alas these parts are beset with peril and my enemies are loathe grant me the rest I desire.
Througout it all, Tempus has blessed me with victory - and I take comfort in the knowledge that my god is with me, guiding my axe surely and swiftly to my foes. He has steeled me against the rigors of my journey and granted me his power to wield in his name.
Already I have seen those whom I seek - Isair and Madae they are called. They are cambion twins, half-demons full of malevolence and cunning. Had I been able to, I would have slain them where they stood, but they left me their minions to contend with instead. With their images burning in my mind, I press on. By Tempus' blade I swear I will stop them.

The comments and journal will be posted tomorrow - my groupmates procrastinated again so I was able to squeeze in a couple of hours of gameplay.

I'm now at that chapter I dislike the most, or rather the chapter that contains the area (Dragon's Eye) that I dislike the most - I love the Fields of Slaughter and the Jungles of Chult (guardian!)

Nice work! Though the difficulty I was referring to was much later in the game. Of course, I really can't know coz I've never tried it.
Comments:
Still going strong. I did the Eight Chambers mostly by using summons and the divine shell combo. Right after that, I decided to make things exciting by not resting and going straight to the driders - it got a little messy since I didn't have much by way of spells but I still pulled it out.
The mindflayers were no problem as I just kept Impervious Sanctity of Mind up at all times.
Madrash and Mirabel I beat by using a good amount of Holy Words and then switching over to Balance ower to make short work of them and their minions.
Journal:
I have found a haven among the monks of the Black Raven. Had my quest been complete, I would have gladly stayed among them. There was a certain tranquility that dwelt in the monastery - one that answered my need for rest, if but for a short while. Unfortunately, the reach of the Legion of the Chimera is far and their influence had already reached the monks before I had. It seems I must contend with them wherever I go.
Despite my yearning to lay down my head and rest, I knew I had to continue. Deep into the Underdark I went, into the lichened caves heavy with steam from heated pools. There I encountered driders - half-drow beings corrupted by their servitude to the cruel goddess Lolth. Driven to near insanity by the will of the Legion, my encounter with the driders was immediate and terrible. They came at me with black limbs and darker magic, their sibilant hisses still haunt me to this day. But in the end I prevailed, defeating them and the Visicamera Heart - the fiendish Thayan creation that spawned the twisted driders.
Through Z'hinda Citadel I continued, battling illithids and forces mustered by the Red Wizards of Thay and I emerged victorious, only to find Oswald waiting for me with grave news - Kuldahar is under siege. My duty calls me.

Chapter: End of 5
Level: 24 (still)
Game Clock: 43 days 14 hours (thanks to Dragon's Eye for that)
Comments:
I was pretty tied up over the weekend due to preparations for finals week, but I finished my second test today and the next two are both on Friday - so as soon as I got home, I did some hardcore gaming, and here I am.
If I hated Dragon's Eye before today I now hate it with a PASSION. The enemies weren't hard, in fact they were ridiculously easy to defeat, I just did melee the whole time - no fancy tricks. The real problem was the fact that the story bogs down due to the whole Nheero fiasco. Again, I didn't have 15 alchemy (it was at 13 hehe) so I had to sneak into the lab twice (and sneaking is pretty tough if you are a cleric) to get the two brews. I didn't have sufficient search skills so I had to wait 24 hours of game clock off for the timed door to open. Then since my character was not astute enough to notice that the 'mama' that Thorasskus keeps referring to is in fact Izebelah from the entrance, I had to relay on good old Nheero to figure it out - except his 'research' takes so damn long - I had to wait out 3 whole days total before he moved from the egg room to the alchemy library to the level 3 library. And I'm a stickler for the game clock value. Grrrr.
The lost followers were easy too, I guess my level was just too high. I will post a picture of the end of them in a post after this one. Another thing that bugs me is that I don't get experience from monsters anymore - not from the Six, not from the golems, not from the demons in the ice temple, and I get like, 300 xp from Thorasskus (when it can go up to 10k). That explains why my level has stagnated. I estimate I'll be level 26 by the time the game is done.
The Fields of Slaughter were fun as usual - the dread orcs were awesomely powerful but I was able to filter them through the entrance of their own camp. Saablic Tan and his goons were a joke, I had no summons and almost no spells left (except 1 divine shell and 1 champion's strength) and I beat them with pure melee. Herr Saablic cast Horrid Wilting twice and that pretty much killed all his minions - I had spell resistance cast. Ridiculous.
Anyway, because I've left you guys in the dark for so long, I've decided to write something more serious for the journal section. Less like the usual journal and more like that thing I wrote for battle squares. This describes the battle with the Six. Enjoy!
'Journal:'
Chiara Dannoth stood before the weathered face of the Duke Kholsa's tombstone. There was a nobility in its simple appearance - fostered by the legend of his deeds and the righteousness of his actions. The battleguard surveyed its pitted surface, brushing away the long blades of grass that had sprung up around it. Her hand, which clasped the silvered medallion trembled slightly.
There was a terrible evil in glen - she could sense it more strongly now - a hidden terror battering at the ethereal barriers that held the planes apart, frenzied in its hatred. It was just as Hiepherus had written in his Vision. Calling upon the power of Tempus, Chiara warded herself with a few protective spells - if there was an evil to be defeated, she had to be prepared.
The early morning air hinted of rain - and the sky was darkening with an unusual rapidness. About her, the beasts she had summoned to aid her stirred uneasily, but she found their crude guttural noises welcome in the stillness of the graveyard.
It was time.
Her face hardened with resolve, she held the glimmering medallion before her, invoking the power that lay dormant in the earth. With a jolting suddenness a brilliant ray of light sprang from Kholsa's burial mound and within its glare it held a sword, radiant with holy might. But with the shattering of the earth came the breaking of the eternal bonds that had held the Lost Followers and they burst forth into the Prime Material Plane howling in fury and the anticipation of the revenge they had long sought.
Above them, the sky roiled in recognition of the imminent conflict, sending down rain as spears among the combatants. Spotting the dark cleric Inhein among the dampened graves, Chiara charged, the dulled morning light glinting off the edge her runed axe. Alone and unprotected, She Who Was Lost fell quickly to battleguard's sharp weapon.
Almost immediately Chiara was beleaguered by the raging tiefling swordsman known as Veddion Karne. Their battle was brutal and bloody, with both trading vicious blows but in the end the strength of the cleric of Tempus prevailed and she cast his broken body upon the earth among the gathering pools of water.
Seeing that the mage Atacalys had already been torn apart by her summoned Remorhaz, she now focused her attention on the keen-eyed Jaegar of the Fanged Seasons. Busied with the werewolf that snapped at him with slavering jaws, the barbarian failed to defend himself against the onset Chiara's sweeping axe and soon he too lay still upon the earth.
Enraged by the defeat of his comrades, Kaervas Death's Head assailed the battered cleric with his powerful hammer, striking again and again with stunning accuracy. Chiara desperately tried to counter but her weapon glanced harmlessly off the duergar's toughened armor. Failing to make headway with her favored weapon, she shouldered her battleaxe and whipped out the heavy mace she carried at her belt. Back and forth they went across the rain-soaked ground laying bone-breaking blows upon each other's half-riven shields. Until at last, dodging a poorly-placed strike Chiara smote Kaervas heavily on his thick skull sending him sprawling back, dead.
Among the Lost Followers only the dark monk Broken Khree remained. Threatened with the return to his nether prison, the disfigured warrior fought with unmatched determination, dispatching the few surviving creatures that Chiara had summoned. But the battleguard had come to far to be beaten. Casting aside the mace she carried, she drew her bloodied axe and advanced quickly on her waiting foe.
Of all the opponents she had faced thus far, Khree fought the hardest. Evading many of her strikes with uncanny skills and countering with stunning fists imbued with many long years of hatred. But in what proved to a duel of endurance, the battleguard's faith in Tempus proved to be the difference. Aided by his strength, the battleguard ended the deadly encounter with a solid blow that caught the monk squarely in the midsection silencing him and the rest of the Six of the second and final time.
The clearing of the skies found the wearied cleric seated at the foot of the Duke's disturbed grave, resting her weight upon the sturdy haft of her axe.

I knew the Severed Hand quests by heart so those were pretty routine. I cheesed the final battle, I regret to say. I devoted first time I tried it to trying out all my different weapons and spells just to see if I could do it without being cute - however, being a cleric, I couldn't just stand and whack away at them (since they do a lot of damage VERY fast) - believe me I tried.
The second time around I just ran the only thing that worked in my initial experiment which was, not surprisingly - Cloudkiss. Apparently the twins are weak against lightning (5 bonus damage). When I got to the radiant pool room, it was the usual four xvim slayer knights. Those, I run-and-gunned with Haft Over Head (who would've known?) and then the twins I just did the same with Cloudkiss.
In any case, my solo game is complete - thanks to all the people who commented! Here is a screenshot of the end:

@Patrick
That was the fourth time to date. I'm probably going to be playing through it a couple more times with different classes before my brother comes over from Seattle to visit. Sophomore year ends tomorrow, so I'll have a lot more time to experiment with stuff.
With regard to your Chamber of Clockwork query in the other thread, I think I'm going to let you give it a shot first before I tell you how I pulled it off. I used a tactic very similar to the one in the Chamber of Sorcery. That's the only hint I'll drop for now - you've already done the Chamber of Sorcery so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how to do this one. Good luck!
@keeB
Hey, how's your sorc-solo going? Just curious. I'm trying to think of another exciting class to solo.
