Seeking New Employment

Post by Mr Sleep »

I'm back on the search for jobs after three years working my current job, it won't be a for a while before I find one and I'm keeping my current job for the time being but the wonderful world of interviews and applications awaits me.

Any advice or experience?

Write some good applications and be well-prepared for the interviews...

Wasn't that a nice piece of advice? ;)

Heh, I don't know what I'd do without you Bordin.

Enchantress, I see some draw backs to that plan.

Your CV or resume is a very critical aspect in job hunting. A good CV would get you the attention from the recruiting officer. When I say attention, I don't mean using scented and/or fancy looking paper. :D

Attention would mean that the way you package yourself is such that you are able to "sell yourself" and convince the reader that you have the qualities and credentials that they are looking for.

edit--- Remember that there wont be any interviews if the Recruiting Officer did not even bother reading your paper. ;)

As for interviews, whenever the interviewer asks that over used request of "Tell me something about yourself.", keep in mind that that is precisely the opportunity for you to tell him why you think that you are perfect for that job vacancy you are applying for. ;)

Thanks Mar, I hate that question, tell me something about yourself, it's so open, "I'm six foot, I've got big feet, I eat cheese, I like whisky and Guinness" Your answer kind of narrows it down, cheers.

Ya, I know I'm a great help. If ya have any other probs or questions just come to me and I'll help ya. It's not for nothing that people call me THE SOLVER! After all, I'm a dwarf ;o)

Anyway, Maharlika got some good points there, even though I would advise you to use fancy paper. Something that glitters would really get his attention, maybe even something that has a touch of silver, that'll really get the recruiting officer's attention :D If that doesn't help you could try to draw some PS:T chars on the paper for the next application, that REALLY has to knock the officer off his feet, I promise ya!

No problemo...

...because really, your response to that request is the most important part of the interview.

Before I forget, dress smart, polite and formal. Being neat and well-groomed may not be the most important but still would be an essential part of the interview. Afterall, if you can't take care of yourself, how do you expect to convince them that you can take care of your job and tasks? ;)

Hmmm... a six footer, big feet, likes cheese, whiskey and Guinness... ...

...what job would that be? :D

A description of an orc applying for a job at an inn in a Black Isle studio game? :)

LOL! @ Bordin...

...on the use of fancy paper. :p

High quality white paper is desired although light green is also recommended because it's soothing to the eyes.

Limit font size to two if possible and refrain from using more than two types of fonts. Acually it is advisable to just stick to one type of font.

Colored fonts can be classy looking but limit the colors to a maximum of two aside from the regular black.

An orc? :D Well, I was actually thinking of Kayless' Khaggoth should he decide to put his DCI into a movie.

Yup, Sleepy, sir...

...during interviews, wearing those psychedelic speedos and colored lights is definitely a no-no. :D

A male model you say? Okay, I take that back.

You're hired. :D

Three quick things:

First, proofread your resume and cover letter. Twice. The quickest way for your application to be thrown out is to have even a single typo somewhere in the text.

Second, interview for everything, even the jobs you would only consider as your fallback options. You want as many people as possible to get to know you, and interviewing keeps you sharp.

Third, don't quit the job you have until you have another one lined up.

3 very valid points there Dave, especially the first one is essential, typos really are a booster for the recycling bin...

In that case...

...Kammy can open such a business when it comes to editing and proofreading. This thing is potentially lucrative for him. :p :D

On a serious note, yes I too concur with Bordin. Definitely substantial ones...

...especially point no.3. ;)

@Mr Sleep:
Have you checked with Speedo to see if they're hiring models?

Heh, I doubt they have much need for a man of my calibre, if you know what I mean. Svelte model I ain't.

Be sure to include your experience as Gamebanshee SYM Moderator on your resumé - that will be sure to land you the job you want! :D

Better yet, you might want to post you resumé here so we can all make suggestions and improvements.... :p :D :p

But seriously, I've found that the best way to get a job is to not only send out you resumé to everyone and their brother, but to follow up with lots of phone calls: "Have you received my letter of intrest yet?" "Have you had a chance to look over my letter?" "Are you currently hiring?" Nothing beats a little voice-to-voice time for getting your application moved to the top of the stack. :)
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.
