Enchanting

Post by Xorekil »

What does it take to give an item a constant effect? Also, the whole system of enchanting items totaly frys my brain. Is there any sites that explain how it works, that is easy to understand?

You need a grand soul gem with something really good in it. ie) winged twilight or golden saint.

To enchant something, you have to have an item, a soul gem with soul inside, and a collection of spells that you know.

I'll walk you through a simple enchantment.

1) Get a soul gem
2) go to an enchanter (usually found in mages guilds)
3) Start dialoge, select enchanting.
4) You'll see a screen come up with a couple boxes.
In the first one, select, say, an exquisite amulet.
5) In your list of effects, lets say you have the spell "open", pick it.
6) A new screen will appear, select "Cast when Used"
Value 100, duration 3-5.
7) A cost will appear at the bottom right. This is the price (duh)
8) In the upper right there are several stats. One tells you if the enchanter is of high enough skill to perform the enchantment, the second tells you if the item can handle that much magic.

Hope that helps man.

Sorry, but a Winged Twilight will not get you a CE enchantment. Only Golden Saint and Ascended Sleeper souls allow for constant effect. Also, as you alluded to, you must know/have memorized the spell effect you want to enchant something with. So if you want a CE levitation enchantment you need a worthy item (like an exquisite ring or amulet), you need to know the levitation spell, and you need a grand soul gem with a Goldie or Sleeper soul in it.

@ Xorekil: This forum has covered this subject over and over again. You might want to try the Search function to find old threads. Also the manual isn't that bad about describing how enchanting works so it might be a good time to look at it again. There are a couple of things that affect your ability to enchant. To gain in Enchanting skill use a lot of Cast When Used enchanted items like healing rings, etc. You get points toward Enchanting each time you do this. Also you can use soul gems with trapped souls to recharge enchanted items that have been partially/totally drained. Just drag the soul gem onto you character paperdoll and a list of drained items will pop up for you to choose to recharge. Your ability to recharge items is dependent on your Enchantment skill and Intelligence so start with petty soul gems. For any major enchantment always use a professional enchanter as they never fail while if you tried enchanting anything major yourself you will almost certainly fail. You can play around with self enchanting with petty soul gems and crappy jewelry if you like to gain experience. However, even if you are successful your new enchanted item will not be worth anymore than the unenchanted item was. Search old forum threads for more info.
