Killing Mekrath

Post by Rodman49 »

Mekrath, the wizard in the sewer, is downright impossible to kill, maybe I just suck or possibly I need a better party but I'm determined to take him out now (and I have the feeling I'll need to experience to face some Vampire Guild or something).

My party consists of:
Ranger - Dual-Wielding Bastard Swords +1 (18 in 4 stats)
Minsc - Sword of Chaos
Yoshimo - Katana +1
Viconia - Warhammer +1
Jaheria - Scimtar +1
Aerie - Mace +1

Other Stuff:
Currently in Chapter 3
Most of people around level 9/10
Access to Valygar, Amomen, Nalia, Mazzy

Mekrath's Battle Strategy:
His first spell is always Animate Dead (bringing up two skeletons) - this really isn't much of a problem but his next spell is. I'm unsure what his next spell is but it lays the unholy smacketh down on my party, almost always killing three members (looks like their souls dissappear or something).

So what should I do? I'm thinking of picking Valygar back up then using Yoshimo and Valygar to backstab him, and hopefully kill him quickly, or is there some way to stop his spell casting/kill him before he casts second spell.

It has been a while since I have actually fought Mekrath, but I believe he is casting either Death Spell (lvl 6), Symbol: Death (lvl 8) or Power Word Kill (lvl 9). It should say in your combat window what he is casting.

If Aerie is able to cast 4th level Cleric spells, have her cast "Death Ward" on everyone that seems to be susceptible.

If not, try nailing Mekrath with as many Magic Missiles as often as you can. This will possible disrupt his spell casting.

He's most likely casting Death Spell, which kills anything under level 8, if I remember correctly. If you manage to kill him though, don't worry about some party members dying, as there is a Rod of Ressurection in the "chest" behind him (and any character can use it).

Spoiler, don't read if you don't want an altenate solution.

When you talk to him, demand Haer'Daelis, but not the Gem.

Then say 'Name your price Wizard'.

He sends you on an easy quest. Once you complete it he grumbles, but gives you Haer'Daelis & leaves. Haer'Daelis then tells you how to get the gem whether he joins you or not.

You get a fair bit of experience this way, so I haven't fought him in a long time.

Method one

Enter room, start Viconia & Jaheria casting
Pause
Have Aerie start casting
Yosh click back stabb
Click on conversation
unpause

Yoshimo invisibility goes behind for back stabb
Viconia – summon insect
Jaheria – summon insect
Aerie – greater malison

If timed right he will have two saves at -8
If not two at -4
summon should disrupt casting

Method two
surround
Viconia & Jaheria start to cast dispel magic
Trigger dialogue
Aerie breach
Every one else pounds away

Method three

Go in trigger dialogue
Go invisible
Run away
Have Aerie use wand of cloud kill from a distance

I have always just done his quest, but I am wondering, if you wanted to go for cheese, if you couldn't just lay traps. Perhaps do the dialogue, tell him you'll get his mirror, and then proceed to surround him with as many traps as possible?

Yep, traps, cloudkill and all the other goodness works. :)

I never had a hard time with Mekrath, except for when my main character fails his save for the death spell (instant death is lame). I think his only 'real' protection is stone skin, so if you send a couple tanks up there armed with flaring weapons you'll make short work of him.

I managed to beat him by . . .

Stealthing my main character, Valygar, and Yoshimo, getting up right next to him, then beating the crap out of him, essentialy, he got off the animate dead spell but died before casting the second, rejoice!

On to the next part of the game . . . should I level up before facing Bodhi (or whoever that Vampire is)? I'm gonna switch Valygar for Minsc on the quest and my party is between levels 9 and 12.

I'm thinking you'll have trouble at that level. Explore a bit, get some better items, and come back when you're ready, probably at level 13 or 14.

Who said anything about cheese

if you were after a cheese I would suggest loading "ease of use", mutiple stronghold mod,

do the mage strong hold, blow up the minions till they produce a staff of power and then use the staff to freeze our buddy for five rounds while you breach and pound :D :D :D

Always have a few Breaches and Silences memmorized because you'll never know when you'll run into a guy like this. I don't remember him being that difficult though. And you can't go wrong with In sect Cheese.
