3 or less hit points when leveling???

Post by Chargolith »

I'm having a problem with leveling. None of my characters are gaining more than 3 hit points when I level. Out of 8 characters all of them are around level 12, but none have ever gotten more than 3 hit points. That's including two warriors with 18 constitution. I've tried saving the game before leveling, then just kept reloading, but everytime it's 3 or less hit points. I've got the latest patch, unless they added a new one in the last couple weeks. Anyone know what's going on?

First of all, here's some background information. Hit points are based on "hit dice". When people play D&D on paper instead of on computers, they actually roll dice to determine how many hit points their characters would get. When you play a computer game like Baldur's Gate, the computer does it for you (which takes away some of the fun). :) If you have the game set on anything higher than Normal Difficulty, the number of points you get when you level up is random, depending on the character's "hit dice". For example, a Fighter rolls a 10-sided die, giving him anywhere from one to ten hit points, plus his Constitution bonus.

What you are noticing is that after a certain level, characters don't get any more "hit dice". Instead, they get a few points per level, depending on their class. For example, a Fighter has 9 ten-sided Hit Dice (for Levels 1 through 9). When he reaches 10th Level, he gets 3 points per level. You can see this on the "CLASS EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES" charts in your manual (see page 227 if you have the U.S. manual). Mages and Sorcerers get 10 four-sided Hit Dice, plus 1 point per Level beginning at 11th Level. Clerics and Druids have 9 eight-sided Hit Dice plus 2 points per level beginning at 10th Level. Thieves get 10 six-sided Hit Dice plus 2 points per level beginning with 11th Level.

I'm sorry if you're disappointed, but those are the rules. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, you'd think as much as I've played games like this that I would've known that. hehe

Sorry, Dazzo. I meant no disrespect to P&P games. I edited my previous post, and I hope you will find it satisfactory now. :)
