Danish SYMians, please help quickly!

Post by C Elegans »

Dear Danish SYM:ers, I have an urgent problem...I need some Danish words translated. We have a collaboration regarding Alzheimers disease and MCI (a type of pre-dementia) with 9 labs around Europe, and the Copenhagen lab is the coordinator. Unfortunately that means I have a scale for rating of Clinical Dementia - in Danish only. I have a subject coming tomorrow, and everybody is on holiday so I can't get hold of a Swedish or English version of the scale. I have tried the lousy web-translators, but some of it just doesn't make sense or the term does not exist. So Xandax, Bloodmist, Vicsun, Azmodan or any other Dane on the board...please help! What does the following mean?

"Er hukommelsen blevet forringet i lobet (lobet is with Danish o with a diagonal line through, I don't have that letter on my keyboard, it's the same as the Swedish ö) af det siste ar?"

"fra fortiden"

"beskaeftiget"

"hvor tit"

"nabolaget"

"plejehjemsbeboer"

"reol" (supposed to be a piece of furniture?)

Thanks in advance!

Not to worry, this is SYM after all. :D

"Has the memory been (lessening in function, worsened, reduced, can't remember the exact word) during the previous year?"

"from the past"

"occupied"

"how often"

"neighbourhood"

"elder people's homes"

"shelves/bookcase"

anytime. :)

Great :) Thank you Jaesha, you saved my day (or rather, my study), I forgot you are a Dane too.

Maybe you name sound a bit Deutsch...

Hm, I found something else I am unsure of:

"Traek 3 fra 20 og bliv ved med at traekke 3 fra hvert nyt tal hele tiden"

Does that mean subtract 3 from 20 and continue to subtract 3 from each new number, like 17-14-11-8 etc?

Thanks again! :) Danish is not so hard to read for a Sweden, there are some words that are very different. The problem start when people speak :D Some accents I don't understand a word of, could as well be Farsi...some other accents I understand quite well. We had a Danish Civil engineer here a couple of years and unfortunately I didn't understand his accent at all - same thing with the psychologist at the Copenhagen PET-lab. Their professor on the other hand, I understand perfectly - at least when she is polite and speaks slowly :D

I like Copenhagen :) I was there visiting Rikshospitalet in March, I might go back later this year or in the beginning of next year depending on how the project is going.

Cool! However, Sealanders (the people from the Sjælland = Sealand side of Denmark usually haven't got any accent at all, that's more people from Jutland... they speak in a long drawling (not necessarily negative) tone. And the Bornholmers, they are just impossible to understand, even for Danes. :D

well, I'm off now, me stomach's aching for something edible. See you around! :)

The word you proberly are looking for is: deteriorated

Also the:
plejehjemsbeboer
translated into:
"elder people's homes"
is only semi-correct, because you forgot the
"beboer" = "resident" or "occupant"
so it should be:
resident in a rest home/elder people's home/nursing home
or
occupant in a rest home/elder people's home/nursing home

Okay - so it is a bit nitpicking - but .... :)

That depends on your point of view... To us, from Jutland, it seems the people from Sealand have the accent, while we don't. It depends on your enviroment, and what you're used too... Ingen taler rigsdansk.

Oh my God! Four Danes dragged in one thread! Run for the hills!

P.S. BM about your sig... you do know that they are probably making fallout 3, right? And no, I'm not talking about Brotherhood of Steel, but about the so called poject Van Buren. While it's not officially anounced, it's almost certain it's fallout 3 they're making. Check out NMA's page for news. :)
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

AFter cleaning off my screen from spraying coffee all over it I thought I'd share my interpretation of the Danish Clinical Dementai ranking system

As translated by Jaesha

occupied - there are a few of us in my head, you'll have to wait until we decide who will come out and play today

from the past - a sentinent thought just occurred

how often - regular sex can offset the progressive dementia?

neighborhood - everyone else is like me so I can't be that bad

elder peoples homes - well, I thought I lived here too and these must be my things (burglar dementia defense)

shelves/bookcases - worst ranking of all, thick as a plank
