Spells

Post by Odin »

When I go to combat, my mages doesnt seem to have the right fighting spells. Nothing powerful that makes my enemy hurt. (they do get hurt, but not much...)(they do get hurt much some times, but not the powerful enemies). So I wondered: Which spells are the good ones? Which spells do you guys use?
I fear that later in the game, I will get some problem over this.
I also wondered if there is smart to start the game as a mage, since there arnt that many around...

Fireballs and clouds will be good at almost anytime. It might not kill on the first shot but it'll at least weaken you enemies.
Helm sees all. Do not offend him in intent or in deed!

Depends on what you're going up against. ALWAYS have Breach and Dispel Magic ready.

Melf's Minute Meteor is a beauty, it's available early, it interupts spell casting, has a high rate of fire, plus it makes really damn cool *swoosh swoosh* sounds. Great spell to have against liches to keep them from casting the deadly Time Stop.

Cloudkill is another nice spell. Another one you get fairly quickly, and you can cheat the hell out of dragons with it.

Purge Invisibility later in the game is a must. Alot of the enemies you encounter will cast spells like Mislead or drink invis potions and backstab the crap out of you. Purge is a godsent in those situations.

Lower Resistance, against dragons, it's another key spell.

Spells like Spell Trigger, Spell Sequencer, Contingency might seem useless when at first, but these are very powerful strategy spells, and you should familiarize yourself with them quickly.

Confusion spells are also nice to use when going up against a group of NPCs.

Earlier in the game, you want to have spells that do damage, but as the game progresses you'll want to have spells that help your fighters get their job done easier instead of actually dealing out damage. But if you like making things die without touching them, Incendiery Cloud is nice because fire elementals are immune to it. Wail of Banshees is a another deadly spell. Meteor Swarm, Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, all are devastating spells.

Death Spell is pretty sweet.
And I love Agannazar's Scorcher, it doesn't do much damage but it's cool.

One that is particularly effective against Umber Hulks, is Cloud Kill. This spell will kill them right away once it damages them. Very helpful in the Flayer Dungeon and Flayer Area.
