Just my opinion, but: first, destroy the Pool that provides her source of power. Multiple Timestops are one very good way to go, here. Once you remove her goon squad of air elementals and destroy the Pool, she has nothing else to draw upon for strength. Then it's a matter of time, energy, and perseverence.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

IIRC the spell Wish can only be cast by a mage or sorceror with a high level of wisdom.
Also (in addition to Fable's suggestions) use summons to keep her summons busy and concentrate mostly on Melissan herself. When you beat her, she withdraws and her summons disappear.
BTW, time stop works great when used against the goons, but not against Melissan herself!
Good luck. I remember how satisfied I felt when I finally beat her the fist time I played ToB!

SPOILER

First you must be aware that there are 3 Melissan fights - with no.2 being the toughest and no.3 being the easiest.
In no.2 you'll probably have to use a decoy - for her to cast area spells (storm of vengeance) and time stop while the rest of the party 1 screen away takes on the summons.

To benefit from wish spell use potion of insight. (In fact all of your party members should drink one). Buff up your chars with everything you've got (fighters should have 24-25 dex from potion of mind focusing, use best strg potions if necessary , potions of speed - or impr. haste spells , potions of invulnerability , regeneration etc.)

Use summons not only to keep foes busy but also as targets for spells. Remember that if she just cast death spell to finish off your summons that gives you a few seconds to cast your spells (use lower resistance).

You may notice that while shadow slayers are a problem the glaberazu demons are not. Use greater malison and slow spells - increased chance to hit for your party , chance to break attacks etc.

Make sure to be well prepared for fight no.2 however fight for the last power pool is a mess as well. If you had let's say 3 time stop spells I suggest you use 2 for Mell and 1 for the last pool.
Death is what you make of it.

And there are things far worse the death. And I know them all.

It's what you're meant to do: go to the Throne of Bhaal as you've already done, meet and fight Melissan, win the first round, cut the first link in the SW corner and continue from there. It's very lineair, apart from losing the fights you can't go wrong.

summon some planetars and she'll die quite easily :o

you can easily beat her melee, just use some spells to make some more fighters etc.

if you have 4 peeps attacking her with decent weapons and improved whirlwind attack, you should be able to beat her in no time. I had my paladin wielding the carsomyr +6, Jaheira - staff of the ram +6, Sarevok - gram the sword of grief +5, and Valagar dual wielding the Crom Faery and Runehammer +5. also, if u want to be scabby, use the runehammers mass cure ability and if u put it in the bag of holding and take it out again, u can use it again and again!!

This fight is so hard. I'm having an awful time beating it, and Draconis and Abazigal really weren't that tough to me.

if, after all these great tips you cant do it:

traps
traps
traps

divide your thieves maximum number of traps by 3, and put that many down each time before you cut off each pool. It wont end the round but you will only need a couple hits to do so
this is UBER CHEESE so only use it as a last resort
its a lot more satisfying doing it the proper way, trust me

good luck

Hopefully, you've managed to kill her by now. This is for those who (like me) just got turned on to BG and would like some detailed help.

FIRST, you cannot kill Melissa until the last round. If you get lucky and manage to silence her (wand of cursing) so she can't summon creatures, she'll just be "near death" forever.

SECOND, separate your battles. Summon up level 7 and up creatures and send them in to the power pads. Let them kill the guardians and save your own party for when Melissan arrives.

THIRD, The minute she arrives, hit pause. Have your mages cast spell strike, ruby reversal, pierce magic etc. Rush in your fighters and hit Mellissan with your hardest weapons. Repeat over and over until she disappears.

FOURTH, Watch for your creatures. Some will die immediately upon trying to attack Melissan. Try to get them to keep Melissan's creatures busy instead. Once the last of them has died, take your party and run, Put enough distance between you and Melissan and her pets so you can use cloud kill.

In the first round, after she is hurt enough, Melissan will disappear to the other side to heal and summon more creatures. Some where in all that pausing, you'll put your cursor to where she was and her name won't come up. Move your cursor to the opposite side and search for her. Once you find her, use your wand of cloud kill to nail her and keep nailing her. If you've got 3 mages or mage/clerics, have 2 shoot cloud kill and one spell strike. Eventually, those cloud kill will have her near death and she'll orb to the next round.

FIFTH: SAVE, SAVE, SAVE. Save between each round. The minute she disappears, SAVE.

Using the same method, send in high level creatures to take care of those guarding the next power pad.

The 3rd round (or 2nd if you don't count the prologue round) proved the hardest the first 8 times I died. The ninth tune, I forced my creatures to deal with her pets and had my party concentrated on Melissan. This is hard because her pets are nasty and want to deal alot of hit damage to your party. And your pets want to get at Melissan. You have an urge to turn around and take care of those annoying pets. But know that, for me at least, oddly, the more damage my party inflicted on her, the more of her creatures disappeared. Within minutes, I was left with just one shadow slayer which my planetar took care of. (I repeated the last two fights to test this strategy and both times it worked like a charm).

The last round is easy but the guardians of that pad is not. You do not have ANY creatures to summon that can handle these guardians. The Fallen Solar was the most difficult. I used Death Fog and spell strike to give my fighters a chance to kill the creatures and was finally left with the Fallen Solar alone. I then used all the cloud kill I could muster and dropped the creature!

After that, the last battle was cruise city.

Super Healing

Tere is a spell, cast by your clerics (Anomen) that will heal your entire party, ANYWHERE they are...

Even though it makes the caster tired...

So... is the time that fighting Melissan was considered spoiler sensitive information at an end?
