With Minsc and your Pally, there's no need for more melee power - go for Mazzy instead, she's amazing with a Short Bow (and there are several very good such).

Nalia is an excellent Mage and with Jan in your party, you're not bothered that her Thief Skills are too low to be efficient. Her main advantages are that she is able to use Thief weapons and that her AC is very low (thanks to high Dex and her Family Ring). Contrary to another female Thief/Mage, she's also available from start...

To look at everyones profiency points is a good start. However, you'll be able to distribute new profs as the NPCs level up. I'd recommend the following, but there are lots of other alternatives, and later "upgrades", that may be worth considering:

Pally - Carsomyr (Two Handed Sword) and Azuredge (Throwing Axe)
Minsc - Dual Wield Flail of Ages and Defender of Easthaven (install bonus merchant patch) (both Flails)
Viconia - Crom Fayer (Hammer) and Sling of Everard (Sling)
Jan - Staff of the Magi (Staff) and Light X-Bow of Speed (X-Bow)
Nalia - Daystar (Long Sword) and Fire Tooth (Throwing Dagger) or Darts
Mazzy - Short Sword of Backstabbing (Short Sword) or Impaler (Spear) and Tancheron's (Short Bow)

Good luck!

Go for the inquisitor.
You'll love the dispellmagic and truesight ability's.
Every game I play that doesnt have an inquisitor in the party, i miss his skills.
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

You're welcome.

A Cleric with the Amulet of Power can handle the undead up close while your other party members use their ranged weapons. So go with the kit you find most interesting!

Don't you think that giving the Crom Fayer to a cleric is a waste of the strength. I'd want to give it to someone who has the maximum number of attacks, dual wields, and has enough hit points to stay in the fray through the end. I might suggest Minsc as he should already have the ** in dual wielding then his second weapon becomes a problem. Jan can also make use of another weapon because you really use that staff for its special abilities so while you don't need them use something else, if equiping and unequiping is not too much of a bother. Bonus on tansheron's bow, which is definately the way to go there (glad to agree), is that you can equip arrows in addition and it will do super damage, and very few things resist lightning. I would say Nalia would profit more from the tugian bow +1, I think she already has a short bow proficiency and the extra attack really pays off. I think Nalia can also put a proficiency point into katanas which means you can use celestial fury in place of daystar. For your paladin pick up Sarevok's Sword +2 from the air elemental plane at the very beginning of the game, it's great for that early.

You seem to be more of a powergamer than I am. I like give my NPCs profs in different weapons in order to be able to use so many of them as possible.

I personally love the FoA for its Slow ability (and it upgradeable in ToB), and the DoE is a +3 weapon (despite the description) and gives a - 1 to AC which is good when not using a shield. Furthermore, Crom Fayer is available only late in the game, Viconia (or Minsc should you prefer) will have to do with a simpler Hammer until then.

Jan is no melee fighter and should therefor mainly use a ranged weapon. The Staff of the Magi gives him the possibility to get away should an enemy come up to close, as well as a possibility to be invisible at will while scouting for traps...

As for Sarevok's Sword, I'd rather recommend Lilarcor, also available early on.
