Well to start, there have been arguments on which is better, either side to side with aran lindvale (and avoid siding with bodhi and co) or to side with bodhi to wipe out the shadow theives and
(highlight spoiler):later to squash her guild as well (which some have argued is the better thing to do overall).
If you want the ring and the stuff lindvale would have given you (highlight spoiler):
if you side with Bodhi, you get all the stuff from aran (off his corpse) and then some, like the dijinn ring and the Rifthome axe
You'll have to choose sides, nonetheless.

What type of party are you playing with? Good or evil? If good, then side with Aran and wipe out bodhi. If evil, side with Bodhi.
You can always play the game a second time to explore things you miss the first time through.

Each path comes with it's own rewards and consequences. I recommend choosing one or the other depending on the overall alignment of your party.
I don't really want to give away specifics as it sounds like this is your first run through the game. My own advice is to choose one or the other and play the game a second time after you finish the first. Select a different group of NPCs and choose the other path (Shadow Thieves or Bodhi) on your second run through and you'll have a completely different experience.

I agree 100% with Ned - if this is your first time through the game go with the path that makes the most sense RP-wise. There is no right or wrong answer - sometimes we tend to overanalyse these things - I know I am guilty of this.
If you learn to like the game as much as most of us you will have plenty of runs through it and can try different options later.

a bit more on s theives vs bodhi, spoilerish
The best advice is certainly letting the role play decide. I was trying to suggest what's been brought up in previous arguments, that siding with Bodhi isn't clearly less evil than siding with the Shadow Thieves, and as a result siding with the Bodhi is a decent option for non-evil role-players. Neither group is good by any stretch. The Shadow Theives are "the largest criminal organization south of waterdeep"; citizens don't feel safe on the streets partly because of them, especially in the docks dist; are power-players (i.e. a major corruption factor) in the Athkatla council; if you get the theif guild the PC has the option to get involved in the slave trade, which then presumably the S theives do since your guild connection offers it to you; and last, you get to crush Bodhi and co later in the game regardless.

I agree with the people who say to roleplay it. As for items and experience, there isn't one single item that will make or break your game, and likely most of your characters will reach the highest possible level attainable under the XP cap. I feel that it is important that you get the most out of the story. My first time through the game I didn't have Crom Faeyr, Carsomyr (no paladin), or Celestial Fury, and I was able to complete the game just fine. I am sure that if one was so inclined, they could take a party of mages and priests through the entire game naked, not using any wearable items, only defensive spells, summoning, Melf's Minute meteors, etc. Irenicus doesn't use weapons or armour, after all.
*Spoiler*
I have heard that certain lawful good characters will leave your party if you choose Bodhi's side.
I personally don't want to ever choose Bodhi's side, even if the material rewards happen to be greater, I gain more personal satisfaction from beating their backsides, and delivering a blow to their arrogant pride. What's better than kicking the crap out of a den of vampires? Doing it twice!
As a side note, my first time through the game, I only had to listen to her servants talking, to know that I didn't like her. They referred to her as "The mistress", and one of the vampires said that I must "obey the mistress". My character is of chaotic alignment, and the thought of being required to refer to someone as "the mistress" is none too appealing. At least when performing tasks for the shadow thieves, they don't make it sound like you are under the whip.
I agree with a previous post though, that the shadow thieves themselves are evil. Also, when you first talk with Gaelan Bayle, he makes it sound like they will retrieve Imoen for you, all you need to do is pay 20000 gold and they'll do the work. Seems not! All they do is hire a boat for you to go to the island, and you even have to kill the rival guild for them! Even that thief that Aran Linvail has travelling on the boat with you, who he says is there to protect your safety, she doesn't even help you fight when you are ambushed!
Perhaps there should be a "Kill 'em all" mod. It would be good to destroy every organization in the city. Shadow Thieves, Vampires, Cowled Wizards (Oh boy, did they get off too easy, or what?), and perhaps even the Harpers. After doing the Xzar quest in the docks district, I began to see the arrogance of the Harpers shining through. They seem awfully proud of their schemes, they do, and tricking others into doing the dirty work? Well they left a bad taste in my mouth, but this would be best left for another topic, I suppose.

I have suggested that before. There is a mod that lets you work for the Shadow Thieves in Chapter Three and then destroy them in Chapter Six, but I don't like the way it handles your betrayal of your benefactors: "They're criminals, and I feel like doing some more killing."
The Harpers you meet in BG2 are not true Harpers; they're sort of a rogue outfit. If you think about it, you don't have to swear to kill all Harpers you meet in order to deal with that situation appropriately.
I pretend that I'm waging a private war against the Cowled Wizards. There's nothing like using your imagination if you want to roleplay. I bait the Cowled Enforcers so I can kill them all (I let Imoen be my guest), and I pretend that I've trashed Spellhold and set it on fire before I leave. I also refuse to work for Tolgerias or any of the others, and I enjoy snatching the Planar Sphere from their clutches.
My biggest dilemma is trying to figure out what a Paladin should do to get to Spellhold. I can't see a Paladin choosing either side in the guild war. I think there should be a mod that lets the Radiant Heart help a paladin get to Spellhold and storm the walls. But they wouldn't hire Saemon Havarian, so you'd have to find passage some other way.

I think the choice between the uptight thieves and the freaky annoying vampires. Should only be influenced by which side u think is cooler, i always went with the thieves my first couple of times cause they seemed like the trustable (a word?) people, but then i sided with bodhi and found it just as fun
I think the items and experience u get shouldnt influence ur choice because, baldurs gate 2 isnt an awfully hard game in my opinion and i think u'll survive either way . . .

I have a burning hate for Bodhi from all my previous games and that tends to influence all my next games. I've only ever sided with her twice and I must say helping her leaves a very dissatisfying taste in my mouth regardless of experience and money value.
Every time I see Bodhi I just want to slap the undead wench three ways to hell.
Grr.....

"Here mousey mousey, the hunt draws to a close here and now." That voice alone begs for her destruction, does it not?
Really, she doesn't seem like a good employer, in her very first line of dialogue she says "I thought that I might have to punish Valen for failing to deliver my message". Who would willingly choose an employer who threatens them with physical harm at every available opportunity? "Follow closely, you would regret doing any other." Presumptuous and arrogant. I was quite annoyed that the screen went blank at that point, and my party followed her to the entrance to her stronghold, and I didn't even have a chance to get in her face about threatening me. Should be a dialogue option for flipping the middle finger at the mouthy creatures you encounter.
As to VonDondu's dilemma about the Paladin getting to spellhold, this is one reason why I don't play as paladins in games anymore. They are far too restricted by their oaths and lawful alignments. I can't imagine the Order of the Radiant Heart raiding spellhold, for one, it isn't a lawful thing to do, and secondly, I don't think that they have interest to make enemies with other powerful organizations in Athkatla. If they did, wouldn't they have destroyed the shadow thieves a long time ago?
Edit: And also, isn't the lawful good alignment about trying to do what is best for the most people? It doesn't seem to me to be a viable option for a lawful character to go about killing loads of people just to rescue one person who was imprisoned for breaking a law they were ignorant of. Then again, Keldorn condoned the vigilantes wanting to burn Viconia at the stake, even though she commited no crime, so I guess that the law only applies when they want it to?
