Dragon's Breath vs Comet
Dragon's Breath vs Comet
Which is better? I have read some posts that refer to the spell comet, but dragons breath has a higher damage (although I have never actually used comet, just DB
) Which is better?
I'm not addicted to BG2! I swear, I can stop any time I want!
Ok, now leave the room, im going to fight Draconis and need to focus.

The description of the spell comet and meteor swarm does not mention anything about fire damage while the description of Dragon's breath uses the words red dragon and breath fire, so I do not believe that comet's damage is fire based because it comet's description also says "the comet itself does 10d10 damage." In addition next to the saving throws for comet it says "none" while next to Dragon's breath it says "special". From what I remember about real Meteor's they are a large mass of metal and rock material that travels at tremondous speed; and when it hits it does tremondous damage. So based on this I use comet against creatures that are fire resistant. Now comet may very well do less damage against fire resistant creatures, but I played the game using comet against fire resistant creatures.

Comet knocks down and stuns opponents for d4 rounds (save vs. paralysis) in addition to the 10d10 damage. Dragon's Breath does twice as much damage, but only knocks down (no stun).
I happen to like both spells (more than any of the other Level 10 spells) and usually equip a 50/50 mix of both.
When I fought Balthazar, I hit him with four Dragon's Breaths and three Comets while my fighters beat the crap out of him and the battle was over in a matter of seconds.
The knockdown and stun part of Comet makes up for the damage and knockdown of Dragon's Breath. I think it all comes down to what you need the spell to do. For single targets, Dragon's Breath is a much better spell because of the 20d10 damage. However, with targets who have lots of flunkies, Nalmarissa et al for example, Comet is better because it affords you the time to beat on one opponent while the others are knocked down/stunned.

Jesus saves! And takes half damage!

A Cavalier (+20 fire res on creation, +20 from hell) with the Red dragon plate and one of the fire res rings will max out the fire res (127)... so Dragon's Breath will actully be a good way to HEAL him

No cheating at all, but it wasn't in Watcher's Keep, it was against Balthazar.
I kept both Aerie and Nalia in the party for the entire run and got Imoen at Spellhold. By the time I got to Balthazar, Imoen was 26th level, Aerie was 22nd Cleric/18th Mage, and Nalia was 28th level.
Imoen got three 9th level spells, Nalia four, and Aerie one. All of their spells were either Comet or Dragon's Breath, except Nalia who had a Summon Planetar spell memorised.
I also had an elf ranger (Celestial Fury & Spectral Brand +5), Minsc (Axe of the Unyielding +5 & Runehammer +5) and Sarevok (Gram the Sword of Grief +5).
As soon as I saw Balthazar, I hit pause and had Imoen, Aerie and Nalia unload one spell (either Comet or Dragon's Breath) on him. The dialogue started and as soon as it ended, his monk flunkies appeared and the game auto-paused.
I had me, Minsc and Sarevok activate Greater Whirlwind and began wailing on Balthazar. The Dragon's Breaths and Comets began falling and his flunkies were taken out of the combat. I think I also got lucky with a couple of Deathbringer Assaults and hits from Celestial Fury, because after the second round of spell attacks, Balthazar fell and the next Solar "dream" sequence started.
When that ended, I got back to Balthazar's stronghold and his flunkies had disappeared. I never wasted an attack on them; it was all about beating the hell out of Balthazar.
