Wow, Mr. Dave, way to insult a whole spectrum of people! (Dixie Chick/country music listeners.) Got any data to support the claim that "the primary audience of the Dixie Chicks is the conservative country music crowd who is prone to blind obedience and supporting fellow rednecks" - ? While we are at it, how do you define "redneck," anyway? I would be glad of enlightenment on that one.

Hey! I know what lets do: lets play a little game where we take HLD's statement, and turn it 180 degrees so that we have a fair and balanced perspective here.

Here we go: It also doesn't help that the primary audience of the Dixie Chicks is center-right and tends to support like-minded political figures (like Dubya). Other bands, such as Indigo Girls, have criticised the Dubya and the war, but have experienced no such backlash (partly because their audience consists primarily of whacked-out neo-hippy lesbians and partly because they aren't played on mainstream radio very much).

There are all sorts of people out there, with all sorts of ideas and opinions. Just because they are different from yours doesn't mean that they should be tagged with insulting labels.

@VonDondu: I would tend to agree, though I still have a hard time believing that the stations "manipulated" people. I don't know. I'm just a strong believer in the idea that people can think for themselves, and see through manipulation like that, so that if they do write in and boycott it really is because they have strong beliefs and want to express them - not because they have been duped.

But maybe I'm the dupe. :o ;)

No, Lazarus, you're not a dupe. You simply take the ability to think for yourself for granted. You don't realize that you're not being duped by TV, while the people who watch TV don't realize they're being duped. :)

Poor Dixie Chicks...

As per usual, I don't really understand why things like this seem to outrage some Americans so much. In Britain, everyone takes every opportunity they can to criticise, belittle and ruin politicians!

Anyway, I didn't know anything about this particular topic so I went searching for some info and found where the Dixie Chick woman aplogised. I don't know what she said exactly but here's how she retracted it:

Statement from Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks
March 14, 2003

"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Myself, I really like country music, mainly because the musicians and singers are so very talented and the songs so beautiful. Alison Krauss is probably my favourite artiste and I have nearly all of her recordings.

In fact, let me share this with you:

I just wish the whole thing would go away....They said some things the I might think are not appropriate, but free speech isn't there to cover what's appropriate. This whole hate bandwagon irritates me. I wish it would just run it's course so we could get back to hating the Dixie Chicks on the basis that they suck, as is proper :D

One more thing though, and I may be in the minority here, but it pisses me off a lot more to see all the artists that came out after 9/11 with songs about America and patriotism. It was like watching the vultures come out to cash in on someone elses tragedy. That's just the way it seemed to me at the time.
