I agree that there is very little roleplaying in Temple. I can see that if it is your main game, it would be kind of boring to constantly hack 'n' slash every session.

We've run into the problem of having too many original characters die. There is only one original party member still in the group. Our first PCs had bought into the story, since they were there from the beginning. However, once PCs start dying and new ones are brought in, it is harder to really work them into the group since there aren't many roleplaying opportunities.

Overall, I think 3.5 is ok. Some of the changes are good (nerfing of some of the buff spells), others I'm not sure I like (weapon sizes for Small/Medium/Large characters).

Ever thought about ressurecting them instead of replacing them?
I mean, it might cost 10.000 GP but it makes more sense.

Our DM won't let us create new characters after we entered the temple. So far we needed to do this only once. Strange thing is that our fighter just doesn't die, even though he gets hit the most since he's in the front line. :D

You mean, once you die in the temple, you are out? That seems kind of rough...

Would I be safe in assuming that your cleric is right behind/next to the fighter, pumping healing spells into him? :)

My D&D group is not big on ressurection. We generally feel it takes a lot of suspense out of the game. In our main weekly game (in the DMs own world) ressurection is barely even available. Maybe in one place on the continent we are on.

In Temple, it is available, but either we don't remember it when we die, we don't have the 10k gp available, or we don't like our characters enough to be bothered.

Yeah, but you have to have a good roleplay excuse to allow new characters into such a far advanced story. (unless it's a new player)

It's more logical that people who went through much together ressurect eachother... even though it costs a lott.

But I guess it's different for everyone and there is no one right way. :)

Edit: If we die in the temple we need to be ressurected.

I agree with you that if we took this particular game more seriously, ressurection might be a more viable option. A tight adventuring party would make an effort to raise each other.

I guess the way I would look at it is:

Our weekly game is like BG II (lots of roleplaying, a real reason for the party to be together), our monthly Temple game is like Diablo II (tons of hack 'n' slash, no real reason for the party to be together).

How often do the PCs in your game get ressurected? While there is a decent amount of loot in the temple, I can see that a couple of ressurections would take huge bites out of the spoils.

1. Yes.

Next question...

Just kidding. :D
Yes you can, I had one.
It's important, if you create a in dept character, that the camplain allows it. If you have a campain with bearly any roleplaying, then it's just little fun. But if you play a campain with lots of room for roleplaying, you'll have a blast.
In such a case, it doesn't really matter if you have a super strong character. It can be more fun to play a character with a weakness or two.

My character was a half elf druid.
He hated himself for being what he was. Not a human, nor an elf. So trying to escape this, he joined the shifters guild. Those people specialise in shapeshifting. And a level 10 shifter (level 10 is max for a prestige class) looses his own true form and can become anything he wants like a shapeshifter (whithin limits naturally). This was his goal, but he came to his end, finding a dagger in his back... :( I swiched character at that point since the campain was more hack and slash anyway.

We'll be starting a true roleplaying adventure campain in a while and I'm looking forward to it. An adventure custom made for our own characters. :) :)

Edit:
In the end, you can make any character you want. Just keep it real and believable. The only limitation is your imagination!

@Taco Magus

I also agree with Rob-hin. The only bounds there should be on what type of character you create are:

1) Is the DM ok with this concept?

Pretty much self explanatory.

2) Will this character potentially ruin the game for the other players?

A kleptomaniac halfling might be fun for YOU to play, but I can easily see it driving the rest of the party mad. "Sebastian Greentoes got caught picking pockets. AGAIN. Let's go bail him out... AGAIN." A cowardly fighter who runs whenever possible is an amusing concept :) but would fast get annoying and burdensome.

Other than those two points, let your imagination run wild.

Indeed, I avoid most combat related characters problems myself.

Remember Khalid from BG...?
Man! In the end when he ran away AGAIN in the middle of a fight, I killed him myself.
