Bug in Five Flagons Playhouse quest?

I give up. Last time I went to the Playhouse, Higgold asked me to defeat the barbarians & so I did. then he said come back the next day for dress rehearsal & so I did. Nothing happened; Higgold wasn't even there. Then I went to talk to Samuel Thunderburp & he addressed me as the "former" owner of the Playhouse! Can't figure this out -- thought I'd dropped the Deed in the Asylum, but turns out I had it in my bag of holding. Any suggestions???
