Poll: Most Common spell in fantasy games?

Post by Galuf the Dwarf »

For a while I've been thinking about this, and I finally thought of what to do with those thoughts: make a poll about it.

Some spells just don't seem to die out when it comes to usage, don't they? Why don't we see what we all think is the most common spell in practically all fantasy games, whether it's an RPG, a fantasy strategy that utilizes spell-casting, or whatever.

Well, the thing is that 'Magic Missile' is in FR/D&D games, but not much else, I think. Sorry. *shrugs*

I would have to vote for "other" and say healing magic. Cure Light Wounds, channeling positive energy...

Whatever you want to call it, I can't think of a fantasy world that doesn't have some kind of healing magic.

I tend to be the 'idiot' of RPG's, and am forced to run around while angry wizards throw balls of fire at my ass. It's definatly the most prominant spell out there, though summon creature is up there as well.

My opinion, too. Cheap, effective, and pleasant to look at. No nasty sunburn afterwards, either.

I think I made an error in explaining the intent of this topic.

Rob-hin, fable, I think it's time I rephrased my intent for this topic. The thing is, this about what spells you think are the most likely to be universally applied to the overall repetoir (sp?) of spells.

I don't intend to sound like I'm disvaluing, but I believe there was a misinterpretation on my part. This topic has more in common with ALL TYPES OF FANTASY GAMES WITH SPELLS. What about fantasy strategies, action, and more? I can understand, and sincerely apologize, if what I said was misread or misinterpreted. Okay?

Let me see - *all* fantasy games - sheez - I can't remember that many anymore (attentionspawn dropping, eeeek).

Gotta be a fireball type thingy.
Can remember such back from when playing Masters of Magic I think (the civilization type magic realm game I played) was called.

Even back into Phantasia I + III from, what - late 80's?.
Also in Magic:TG I belive there was a fireball in "red deck".
And all I played between there up to the lates D&D 3.ed.

Besides - I think the naming of the spells leads up to it is FR /D&D spells you are talking about.
Have never besides BG-series/NwN seen a spell called Stoneskin in any of the many games I've played.
So I can understand if somebody misunderstood your intention :)

Probably "luck" or something doing exactly the same(almost nothing) but named different.

edit....oh sorry, misunderstood as well. Anyways, in most fantasy games(that I played) you don't have much of a choice in your spell repertoire, so I really dunno the answer...

Well, I am all too familiar with Master of Magic, Xandax, and all of those spells I have in the poll were in there.

Fireball = Chaos Magic
Lightening Bolt = Nature Magic (or was it Sorcery?)
Dispel Magic = Sorcery Magic
Stone Skin = Nature Magic
Bless = Life Magic

My entire family was ADDICTED to that game, and we've been hoping, praying, you name it, just to see it rereleased somewhere in the near future.

And not just RPGs. :D :p

Well, I have only played the Infinity Engine RPGs, and Arcanum briefly... which seems to have pretty much the same spells under different names. And yep, fireball's in there. What's the point in being a mage if you can't throw big fiery things at people, eh? :D
