What items can you export with you to BGII?

Post by pgroves »

What items can you export with your character to Baldur's Gate II? I saw a site which listed all the magical items you could take with you (there were about a dozen or so), but I've now lost the URL - doh! The only thing I can remember is the golden pantaloons... If someone can point me to the relevent URL, or can remember all the items, I would be most grateful! Thanks

If you are playing a single person game only your main character will be exportable to BG2. At the end of BG1 the game will automatically make a saved character file with you char and all his/her equipment. You can transfer this file to your BG2 character files and then use the import function to bring the character into BG2 during the character creation phase. The game will reset the character's xps (up or down) and you start as a level 9 character. While all the equipment is still with your imported character at this point as soon as you start the opening scene of BG2 all the equipment is stripped from the character. If you had the golden pantaloons in your inventory those will transfer over to BG2 but they will not be on the character. They will be found in a wall safe that you will discover once you begin to explore the opening area of BG2. This means if you have a really high level BG1 char you will lose the extra xps you might have earned. On the other hand you can take a brand new level 1 char from BG1 and export him into BG2 and gain xps and levels automatically. If you played a multiplayer game with other characters of your own creation, these to can be saved and exported to BG2. You can export/save any/all of your custom made characters using the character info screen. The big bonus from importing a BG1 character is the stat boosts you may have given him with the various tomes. Starting a brand new char in BG2 does not account for the tomes. If you have ToTSC and got all the tomes and had the main char read them all you will be starting BG2 with a nice uber character (plus 1 to all stats and plus 3 to wisdom). This, to me, is more important than any of the equipment you may have collected and helps maintain the continuity.

Here's the spoilers: (highlight to read)

You can trick BG2 into not stripping your imported character's equipment with a simple technique. After you have imported the custom characters and begin the game just hit the spacebar to pause the game as soon as the screen goes black. Now your character's picture will appear on the right hand side of the screen. Click on the portrait to open his inventory (just like you've done in the past when playing the game) and drop all the character's equipment onto the floor. Now hit spacebar again to unpause and let the game load. Once you have the opening dialogs out of the way click on your character to open the inventory again. You will see that you are standing on all his equipment that you just dropped. While this equipment will be useful you will soon discover that BG1 equipment is pretty tame compared with some of the uber weapons of BG2. In the first area (Irenicus' dungeon) you will rediscover Baldur's Helm, Sarevok's two handed sword, a bastard sword+1, staff+1, some enchanted chainmail, etc. There are tables and crates with pretty good selection of most of the basic weapons and armor as well so you can get equip the party.

Here is the list from Sabre's Post in the BG2 forum (thread name = Imported Items....possible spoilers?):

1 - Golden Pantaloons - in the picture container where the +1 dagger is.

2 - Protector of the Second +2
- Mail of the Dead +2
- Plate Mail +1
- Missile Attraction +2
- Chain Mail +3
Loot from the leader of the Duegars; only one of the five listed above will appear, they are listed in preference, so if you have a Mail of the Dead +2 and a Plate Mail +1, the Mail of the Dead +2 will appear.

3 - Helm of Balduran
- The Claw of Kazgaroth
- The Horn of Kazgaroth
- Koveras' Ring of Protection
In the bookcase near the between the chest and the potplant - in Irenicus's room. Normally hold a Chromatic Orb scroll. Note: only one of them will apear, same as items listed under 2.

Funny, when I imported my Paladin from BG1 to BG2, he still had the same amount of health points at the beginning of BG2 that he had at the end of the first one.

If I remember it to the point, what I did was that I went into the BG2 character viewer, copied the character file from the BG1 character folder into the BG2 char folder. There was no change at all in the amount of Experience Points (about lvl 8, I think) or Health Points (112) I remember that clear as day!

Overall, though, what UncleScratchy posted about the imported items is correct.

(off topic) UncleScratchy, if you read this, I also just thought I'd say that I already finished reading 'The Temptation of Elminster' and 'Elminster in Hell'. Great books.

I believe the first time I exported from BG to BG2 I took note of the experience points and I believe they stayed the same. I would be pretty mad to see my character lose experience after destroying the evil of the sword coast.

by default you start with 89000 xp, either by starting a new BG2 char, or exporting a BG1 char with less or equal xp. if you have a ToSC char, you can get him to 121000 xp, and import him with this amount.

The amount of exp uptainable in ToSC is 161.000, and belive that is the max amount that thus also can be imported.
