maybe you need to insert a different BG2 disc? (there are four, and need changing for different areas)

im not sure, but for the lag i believe you need to change your frame rate in the configuration and make it higher.....could anyone give me a second opinion?

Re: The Lag

I have the same problem with lag after about an hour of play. I find it is not quite so bad when I shut off the 3D aspect of the game. But having to do this is quite annoying when my machine is well and truly way better than the recommended requirements on the box.
About the only suggestions I can make is to make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card and the latest DirectX release installed.
If that does not help, unfortunately I think you are in the same boat I am and just put up with it.
Although shutting down your computer and restarting it does seem to help.

doing a full install means you don't have to change the cd rom...

turn off enhanced pathfinding....

set statics to disable during combat...

make sure you're using 16 bit color...

and defrag, defrag, defrag....make sure you have latest patches...and video drivers and direct x...

and did i mention defrag???

forgot to mention...you can turn off and carefully set parameters by running the "bgconfig" in your menu...

be very careful, as setting some configuration may make your game unplayable...

actually bgconfig will warn you when you open up the advanced graphics section and video card configuration...

you should avoid fooling around with those unless you know exactly what you're doing...in fact, I don't ever go into those menu options... :p

You can also try to delete the content of the cache folder in your BG2 directory.
