Info on monsters

Post by Jess »

I was stunned the other day when a Death Spell took out 7 Umber Hulks, as I thought their hitdice were too high. Does anyone know where a list of monsters, their hitdice, their AC and THAC0 can be found? I just think that this would really help when planning battles, what spells to use, what weapons to equip, etc :)

I don't have a list of monsters, but Umber Hulks are also easy to take out with spells like Cloudkill & even fireball.

Some of the mages & even liches also don't have very many hit-points. If you can get past their protections, you can use that to your advantage.

I do have some pointers on where to find the info you seek.
1. You can look up monsters in Shadow Keeper.
2. I'm sure most of the monsters will be the same as in the 2nd Edition D&D Monster Manual.

Of course, option#1 is free & more accurate.

Another great use for the Death Spell is in the Kuo-Toa lair. It instantly kills all of them exept (I think) the shaman and the whip. Even the prince goes down to it.

The Monster Manual? Actual copies can be in book stores that sell Role-playing game manuals & such. Waldenbooks (if there is one around where you live) is a great store to find such. Still, you might find quite a bit of stuff for the 3rd and 3.5 editions as as Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (what could also be called 2nd Edition, at this point, I guess).

That's just one of the many options you have.
Dungeon Crawl Inc.: It's the most fun you can have without 3 midgets and a whip! Character stats made by your's truly!

I use Infinity Explorer or Shadow Keeper to look up creatures or characters when I want to know their stats. SK is probably the easier of the two to use. Just click on the 'View' button and select 'Creature Browser' and then scroll down the list.

For example, here is what SK tells me about your basic Umber Hulk:

STR=20, DEX=18, CON=9, INT=16, WIS=9, CHR=9
Base hps=44*, Base AC=2, THACO=11, Attacks=3
Weapon=Hand to hand attack

*There are many different Umber Hulks in the game. Other versions have the same basic stats but more hps. There is one with 54 hps, one with 74 hps, and another with 150 hps. Then there is the Umber Hulk Elder with a STR of 21, AC of -2 and 110 hps.

or if you're using a small party, and if a fighter can choose a high level ability, try using a arrow of detonation, or fireseeds with g deathblow...

it literally mows them down like poisoned roaches...

mindflayers, beholders, etc are all below 12th level, and d deathblow and a area effect weapon insta slays them, ignoring magic resistance and saves...works on drow too...

hehhehhehehhe!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D
They call me Darth...

Darth Gizka!

Muwahahahahhahahha!!!
