Well - it seems you have already decided on dropping Jaheria, so go ahead.
You have plenty of healing powers with Amoen and Aerie together to justify leaving Jaheria for sure.

Why are you going to put in Viconia? She creates all kinds of problems for party chemistry. She won't be too happy to be allied with your lawful good paladin PC, especially when you start raising your reputation. There is one other problem, which will be under the "Spoilers" at the bottom. If you are so interested in Anomen, then why not keep him instead of Viconia? Granted, her 18 WIS is nice, but Anomen at least fits your party, and is certainly a fine spell-caster. Minsc or Keldorn is really a toss-up for me; some games I pick one, some the other, some both, and some neither; it really just matters on what their role in your party would be. Anyway, about that other problem with Vic...

SPOILERS...

It should be mentioned that eventually Keldorn and Viconia will both leave your party to fight to the death if left together for too long.

No lack of good party choices, imho.

1. Keldorn

2. Mazzy

3. Aerie

4. Nalia/ Imoen (as you like)

5. Jan (You need a thief, surely?)

For NPC mods, you are really spoilt for choice. Take a look at:

1. Kelsey (sorc rocks!)

2. Tashia (did I say sorc rocks? How about 2 of those? :) )

3. Solafein (Not really "good" per se, but good enough :) )

So there you are. Happy partying!

What's a good party?

Well, even staying within the vanilla game with no mod NPCs, shadowkeeper hacks or what-have-you, there are a bunch of good choices. Don't sweat the choice - I had a pretty funky first group and made it through ok.

The first question you need to resolve for your party is what you want out of it - RP good, RP evil, loads o'conflict, melee heavy, mage heavy, priest power, munchkin special, what have you. Given the party structure you specified, here are your choices:

2 FIghters, similar kits - well , that's you and Keldorn, since he's the only paladin NPC. Korgan, Mazzy, Minsc & Valygar will be sitting it out I guess.

You really do need a thief, so it's Jan or Yoshimo since your main is a melee. I'd personally go with Jan, if only because he's funnier. Despite Yoshimo's cheesy skill, the special traps actually become a hassle later on

Edwin's the only single class mage (and an astoundingly good one IMAO), but if you have a problem with the evil thing, go with the otherwise lackluster Nalia.

That leaves you the single, dual & multi-classed priests, which is Aerie, Anomen, Jaheira and Viconia. You've got two slots for four NPCs (Five if you count Haer'Dalis as an "other"). Viconia is a great cleric, but she IS stone evil, so she will be problematic unless you have the Happy Party mod installed - I'd go with Jaheira and Aerie in your shoes. Personally I like Anomen, but a lot of people find he makes them crazy.

So, I would suggest:
Undead hunter PC
Keldorn
Jan or Yoshimo (your choice)
Edwin or Nalia
2 of Aerie, Anomen, Jaheira
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

Small Note: Make SURE to give Keldorn the Gauntlets of Dexterity, he's terrible without.
Jan's theiving skills were always good enough for me, if you don't want to go round stealing from every shopkeeper. Yoshimo hurts too much :)
Viconia is the best Cleric, and not bad in a fight, so if you had Minsc instead of Keldorn you could get her. Can't stand Anomen myself. I don't think you need more than one Cleric, I always seem to end up using them as second rate fighters. Jahiera gets on my nerves as well, but she has some nice quests.
Edwin is a must, especially as he can memorise extra spells.
I can never bear to leave Imoen, but I suppose you could have Nalia... She's pretty weak though. I prefer Aerie, but again she isn't really compatible with Viconia.
I'd probably stick another fighter in, Korgan or Minsc or something.

No best party

Unless perhaps UserUnfriendly, Littiz, Xyx and company get together and hack one, there IS no best party ever. There may be a best choice for you.

PS: if you use heavy abbreviations like that, people will tend to take your opinions less seriously - try taking the extra few seconds and writing things out.

and even then we'd disagree....

for example, I don't like bards...

and best???

most powerful?
most fun?
best design for any situation?
dual or multiclass?
hacking (cheating) or no cheats?
modded or unmodded?

as other people have mentioned, you can play thru and win using ANY party configuration...the fun is trying out different parties and seeing which ones you like...
:p

Just going by your desired class breakdown, you might try the social-reject party that proved to be insanely powerful for me (took down eclipse on 1st try/imp. irenicus on 2nd).

PC - Sorc
Kelsey
Solaufein
Valen
Minsc
Viconia

The weakest link was actually viconia, who by herself could have soloed most of the game, holding crom fayer and topping out over 100%mr.

actually that party is very very very powerful...

sorcs rule...

2 sorcs are awesome...

solafein is very powerful once you get either the moonblade or ray...

valen is the most outrageously powerful npc ever...due to a coding bug in the infinity engine, a fighter thief can get multiple assassinate special ability...an improve hasted valen with dual wield claws and assassinate active can hit as much as 100 points per hit..and level drain is obscenely powerful...

viconia and minsc are both excellent...

my version of the most powerful party...

pc...kensai sorceress cleric druid...
solafein-kensai conjuror with both moonray and blade... :p
jae-kensai shapeshifter
aerie- conjuror cleric...
imoen-wildmage thief...(with spike traps added... :p )

the last one might be tashia, a great sorceress, and with many fun quests, or chloe, a kensai, or whoever i feel like..

sometimes a sorceress nalia, with no thief powers at all...2 sorcs are evil evil, did i mention they are evil???

:D

Heh, User...if you want to talk about Valen's cheese factor, try having her throw a few time traps around. She likes to just go out and attack everything anyway, she must have perverse fun when they're just standing there. The final Ascension battle always froze on me since I use a laptop, but when I attempted it, she took down Illasera, Balthazar, Sendai, and Sarevok under planted time trap before they even had a chance to start attacking. Even if one didn't take advantage of the assassinate engine problem, she can read a mislead scroll through UAI for wholesale slaughter. oh yeah, and let he dual wield her claws and sanchu. Truly evil.

Basically with that party, I would just tag team between characters and try and let them solo each battle while the others would just sit back and laugh.

The only thing I might tweak would be swapping tashia for kelsey. I tried out tashia after playing the social-reject party and besides thinking her to be a bit more fun to play, her cat (can't remember the name) proved quite useful a lot of times sucking up some nasty spells early in the game.

Parties..

Dios: I'm glad someone else likes Anomen ;)

Currently having big fun in Eclipse with:
Deodand 12 Kensai/Thief
Edwin (hacked to sorcerer)
Jaheira
Valygar
Jan
Solaufein

I've usually just brute forced my way through the fights - this one requires some tactics

ZOOT:

If you're roleplaying, despite Edwin's abilities, I'd suggest replacing him with Jan. He'd provide respectable mage support to your PC sorcerer *and*, being the best thief in the game, allow you to replace Yoshimo with the fighter of your choice: with Keldorn probably being your best option [true sight, carsomyr potential, role-playing harmony w/Anomen and Mazzy]. But then again, it's always fun watching Jan himself swinging around Carsomyr after gaining UAI. This leaves:

pc sorc
Anomen
Aerie
Keldorn
Jan
Mazzy/Imoen

Alternatively, if you are going to replace Aerie w/Viconia you could then keep Edwin, go with Korgan, and have a party of resembling

PC Sorc
Viconia
Edwin
Korgan
Yoshimo/Imoen
Jan (thief when Yoshimo leaves) or possibly Minsc (since Anomen would probably have to be dumped and his fighter backupness gone)

I played a very similar party to this and it's very powerful. (all the same but w/Jan& Minsc and no Imoen)

Valygar could of course be swapped in temporarily for the planar sphere, but I never found him to be good enough to keep around.

Hmmm
Actully i REALLY don't want Edwin gone but will Keldorn and Edwin eventully fight like Vicionia and Keldorn?

I ditched Mazzy for Keldorn and with his Casomyr+5 (man the harderest battle in the whole game with Firraferg)
He does along 30-50 dmg which is GOOD

Also 3 of my 6 all know magic missle and that comes so Useful in some parts.

The weakest link is Aerie but with her good spells im hardpressed to ditch her

I find having 2 clerics quite unnesserary some of the time when i battle
And im looking foward to be getting Imoen BACK ! YEAH THATS GONNA B GOOD!

Also where do i download the MODS and if i DO download them can you plz tell me where to find them IN BG2.

thanks

Mods, etc.

See the BG2 references sticky thread at the top of this forum & follow the links for MODs & patches. Oficial Bioware patches (if needed) & Baldurdash should be installed first, then WeiDU mods in any order. Mods like The Darkest Day are a bit trickier, and TC mods are a whole different ball of wax.

The happy party option is a good bet if you want evil & good NPCs together - it doesn't remove all the good obloquy, just prevents them disbanding or attacking each other. I don't think Edwin & Keldorn will actually fight, however.

If you haven't played through all the way, I wouldn't MOD at all untill you have, except for bug fixes, ease of use, and the bonus merchants.

I've heard Edwin can get in fights with other NPCs but I've never had it happen. However I have had him walk off when my reputation got too high.

Keep Aerie. She's a juggernaut once she gets to higher levels. And she is certainly enough cleric for you, especially if you have added Keldorn.

If you like magic missile and are thinking of going with some of the more popular mods, try a party of:

PC Sorc
Edwin (though I'd go with Tashia or Kelsey mods)
Solaufein (extremely good fighter/mage, is usually enough tank by himself for most battles)
Haer'Dalis
Aerie
Jan

Sure, it's melee-light, but Sola can stand up to most anything thrown at him, Haer'dalis can be a decent enough backup fighter, and everyone can summon cannon fodder if needed. And heck, if you like the glowy magic missles flying - there's 30 of them going at once to the target of your choice.[and if you start chaining project image, well...]
