Which henchmen

Post by Zelgodis »

I am a Mage Fighter in NWN and I was trying to figure what henchmen I should use I have used the bard but she really doesn't do much for me. I used the troll he is ok but is kinda stupid. The Wizard I didn't get because I already cast and fight. Should I just stick with my summoned tiger and my Fire Imp ?

Personally I mostly use Dealan the barbarian (Half-orc ... i think it is him you call Troll :) ). I use Dealan eventhough my main character is a fighter type also, beause he is one of the few henchmen that can stand his own - although I think the monk (Grimgnaw or something) also would be quite good, but he is evil wich don't fit with my concepts.

I've gotten new respect for bard henchmen when I played SoU, the bardsong can be a real asset for a fighter type when the bard gets some levels.

I rarely use the spellcasting henchmen, and if I do I stick with Linu - the cleric, because at least she has some usefullness :)

Tomi I never user - at all. I bash or blow up chests and doors and set off traps with summons or myself if needed.

So basically - for the original campaing I'd go with Dealan if you wish a henchmen or the monk (if you want evil).

This is of course my personal choice.

Always a personal choice - especially considering that you can fly through the game solo with no problems.

I use Linu (elf cleric) often. She is useful as a healer and can fight fairly well. I often play an elf - so she makes sense in that way as well.

Again - It really is a matter of personal taste - although if you want a trap/lock picker - Tomi would be a good choice - personally I find his voice set is unbearable after a few hours of playing....

Grimgnaw worships death, but he's hardly evil. He simply has an unusual diety... Albiet, one that (depending on the interp) could be evil.

A monk only needs to be lawful - afterthis they can be good, neutral or evil.

He has a Lawful Evil alignment - that in the D&D world, makes him evil.

Most of the henchmen are useful (in classic) Except for the Vulcan sorcerer(you know who i'm talking about).

Tomi- He is my usual first pick if I take a henchman to handle locks and traps early. I find him incredibly useful for damage output with his sneak attacks and he usually has pretty good survivability. Later on he is still good with decent armor and his sneak attack damage keeps up nicely. It is a pity he can't take full advantage of his rogue skill set, instead little more than a lock-picker, sneak-attacker, and trap-disarmer. If he could go stealth he would be far more useful.

Daelan- Good up front fighter, but I don't usually pick him because of his crappy armor rating (he just takes too much damage and this makes it tedious to keep him alive). He rips through the smaller buggers like a hot knife through butter though, and its not like you are getting a lot of xp from them anyway.

Grimgnaw- this creepy sounding character is a lot like Daelan, except he has better armor overall. Like daelan, he can rip through smaller enemies, although I haven't worked with him enough to see if his lower attack bonuses affect how he performs with tougher critters.

Sharon- All I can say is 'Grade A Goodness'. While lacking the damage output of the previous melees, in later acts when her powers build, She will rack you up full of buffs and you will never want to come down from that high. Most importantly, her song is incredible at higher levels and she has this wonderful tendancy to cast Haste on you, among other buffs. The only thing you have to look out for is if someone slips in behind you (she will take heavy damage for using a bow). I do not reccommend letting her use the 2 bladed sword, she is best left in the back

The Vulcan (Boddynock)- I say never use this one. His AI is suicidal. The first thing he does in combat is run forward to cast Mage Armor on you, then proceeds to draw attacks of opportunity from every nearby enemy until he dies as he casts other petty buffs instead of keeping his distance or blowing them all away with his sorcererness.

Linu- Good, but not the best. Her AI seems to favor using all of her offensive spells early at range before closing in.. this usually means high level spells on 2 hp gobbies and 4 hp orcs which is a waste. She has good armor, but not as good as she SHOULD have (Give that cleric some half plate!), thus she tends to die quickly when things get tough and is engaged in melee.

Windsors Top Picks:
Tomi (rogue/damage support), Daelan/Grimgnaw(meat shieldage), Sharon (Buf***e)
