Things I don't like about KotoR
I agree with most of you guys, the 1 item at a time is a pain, not being able to run if you are attacked is another, but I think this one might take the cake, why only human characters? I think the one of the biggest appeals in the Star Wars universe is the abundance of different races. They could have eaisly made a few more character models to include other races, and attribute and skill bonuses and penalties appropriate with each race. If you have played Jedi Power Battles, that Ploo Koon guy looks badass, I would have loved to be able to choose different races as the main character. One of the biggest strengths of todays rpgs is the building of your character, I was very disappointed with this aspect of the game. Maybe they will throw in a few different character models in the game as DLC... I can only hope.

Good one Sith Lord. And yes, I want to revise my list. My absolute number one gripe is the one at a time scrolling combined with the one at a time "Give Items" to containers. This should definitely have been noticed and dealt with.

One thing that gets me, even though I realize its necessity -- and this is the case with most RPGs-- is the way people always end conversations. You'll be talking to Carth about some pretty heavy stuff, some really personal trauma, and then he basically brushes it off like, okay that's all for now. And then the "is there anything else I can help you with?" I hate that. They just bore their soul to me, and they now sound like they're offering me a glass of water...? It just annoys me when RPGs go to great lengths to be as good as I think KotOR was and then the dialogue is just... lame.

Yeah, you can add to that list Juhani's self-pity, Jolee's crotchity old man syndrome, and Mission's screechy pleas for attention. Hell, even the damn wookie gets in on the whining...
It's stereotypically cliched according to type, but at least it provides some real character. They're also appropriate, given wht each person has gone through. Would you rather be accompanied by the Donna Reed Show, with no problems at all?
And Jolee's stories (like those of Jan in BG2; in fact, they were probably written by the same in-house person) are delightful.

I know; but the fact that you mind it at all interests me. I'm not trying to change your opinions; I hope I didn't give that impression. But I'm curious why you don't like "NPCs with problems" in your party. This parallels an interesting discussion we had about a year ago in the BG2 forum, where people were split between those who found Viconia, Aerie, and Edwin interesting, and those who regarded them as annoying losers.

It's not their problems. People are supposed to have problems, that's what makes them interesting. It's the way they all kind of fit too well into societal stereotypes that I think the dialogue takes a little too far. I think, though, the explanation for my feelings on this matter are too lengthy and too unrelated to the forum topic to go into here. Just know, that I don't disagree with anything you've said until this point, I just think you misunderstand my motives because they're difficult to explain in this medium.

Yeesh, people found Aeie interesting? Maybe finger of death, but what a horrendous character...

What was wrong with Aerie? She was young, pretty, naive, and vulnerable. the type of person who needed a strong paladin like my PC to protect her from ruffians who only wanted to take advantage of her.
Back on topic though, one of the things that really annoyed me about KotOR was that there were only like 5 different alien languages and there were many different species of aliens. And those werent even full languages, there were just a handfull of different voice overs for each language repeated over and over. whenever they didnt have voice overs for a specific npc they just made it an alien. now i realize that it would have been near impossible to make different voice overs for every single character but i would have rather just read the text without voice overs than listen to some unintelligible voice over repeated a million times through out the game.

Agreed, Alienbob. It's especially cheesey when you're rushing through the dialogue; it's easy to tell that every other sentence begins exactly the same way. I noticed this most with the twi'lek language.
And yeah, the Music is great. That's one thing that's always been phenomenal about nearly anything Star Wars.

Great Game, But...
First, I want to say Kotor was a great game. I got it for the Xbox and I couldnt stop playing. But there were definately some things that could have been improved. Dont let my comments make you think this was anything but an extremely enjoyable game. Many people touched on the things I didnt like, but there are more:
* First it was too easy. I played on the Normal setting. Yes, I died here and there, but fortunatley I learned to save a lot before opening doors and going to new areas. If I got my butt kicked, I just reloaded the last save and got prepared for the oncoming fight.
* I got the game for the Xbox, typically I hate RPG on consoled, but everyone said this game was often. Using a controller took me a while to get used to. A keyboard would have made things a lot easier. I suppose the PC version will be better.
* Movement and load times. The load times on the Xbox made me want to scream. Moving from one area to another (usually with 1 area or more between them) took way too long. Sometimes I went in the wrong direction and had to go back... A jump to another area would have been better (half the time you couldnt even go back to the Ebon Hawk). And could you move any slower? It took forever to run across large maps. THen you would try to go to another area and some party member is lagging way behind. Or, more annoyingly, a npc locks you into place and you have to swith to them just to move em, so you can switch back and move you. Then there was the underwater part. I literally was snarling in frustration at moving so slowly. Movement has no bearing underwater, you just zapped the sharks. It was purely for effect and I hated it 10 seconds into it. Then there was the catwalk to the bridge on the Leviathen. Hmm.. differenct colored wet suit, just as freakin slow. All that to walk to a door. That could have been a cutscene.
* Bugs. There were a few visible ones, like on tattooine, where your clothes disappeared. Another one of note was talking to someone, like the computer on Kashyyk and 1 or two other places... You would talk to it and get attacked. Well, you can put your focus back on the computer and talk and it thinks the battle was over and go on with the game. Of course, when it was done talking, the droids (and others) still attacked you. Other bugs included getting parts for the Ebon Hawk when on the unkown planet. I had em, went into the ship... and nothing... I ran around the areas twice (which took forever) before I re-entered the EH and a message appeared saying the parts should work.
* The shops. I more or less never used them. Everything I had in the game I found. Im sure I bought a few non quest items, but the only time I used the shops was only early in the game and I was buying stuff for the hell of it.
* Character development. I was kind of dumbfounded as to what to pick when leveling. I wasnt sure what to do... I ended up autoleveling all the chars in the game. Worked fine for me.
* Party Members. I almost always went out with the Jedi. They were far more effective in battle than the others. I never picked the others unless there was a quest related to that char. The only time I used T3 was to open the occasional door and I only used HK in the single mode when rescuing the chars on the leviathan or translating on tattooine. I dont think I ever used Canderous, except just to try him out.
* Cycling through the text. Sometimes you load a game cuz you died, or want to try something differently. There was no way to quickly cut the chase... I just sat there smashing the A button over and over to speed it up a little.
* The map. Very helpful... But it would have been nice to be able to put noted on it to denote where people where standing.
* Pazaak and swoop racing. Pointless. It was fun to play, but had no bearing on the game. I never had a money issue in the game. Other than on Taris, I never did a swoop race. I got bored, and played pazaak players and saved after every win and reloaded after every loss. Did you know they will either quit or accuse you of cheating if you win "every time?"
* Force powers and feats. I never really used em. Other then cure/heal. Even the stims I didnt use much unless I reloaded a game and knew I was going into battle. I just went through and hacked at everyone with light sabers. Heck even on the NPCs I gave them melee weapons cuz they did more damage.
* What was the point of the - whatever is was called - press the right analog stick down. Gee, you can look around! Woohoo. After a while the textures all looked the same, the NPCs have the same faces... so why?
* the menu in the bottom left. I wish the stupid thing would stay on what you just selected, rather then jumpin back to the attack setting.
* The inventory. I never sold anything except easrly in the game to buy the occasoinal quest item. My inventory was full of... well everything. Can you really carry around 30 types of armor and 100 weapons, etc? In addition to that opening up containers. Since you can carry everything under the sun, dont open a container and ask me if I want to take it, just give it to me.
* The ending. I went all the way to the light (that was my goal)... so what was the point? I heard the was a way to see the alternate ending... But there is no way im going to go back thru 40 hours of gameplay just to try some other missions or see some different text or whatever. Would be nice to be able to play the game again with the same char so you can breeze thru the game quickly and try a different path or do a mission you didnt do.
* Save games. WOuld have been nice to put a comment on them so I know what I was had done/was doing. A picture of my chars on front of a door doesnt tell me much.
* gun turrets on the Ebon Hawk. I didnt notice the meter on the bottom right till the last time I had to do it. It was so easy, I thought it was purely a cosmetic touch. THat was way too easy. I didnt even find out what happens if the meter went all the way down.
* Customization and armor/weaps/etc. I fiddle with it, but I never really looked at how it affected anything. I customized all the stuff, but never noticed anything special. Sure damage went up a little... but what is one less hit? The only crystal that was noticeably useful was the one that had a chance to stun. As for armor and weaps, I just went for the highes offense/defense. I have no idea what a "critical threat" is.
* talking to your party memebers. That was a bit of a task. You actually have to initiate the conversation (Except when the game stops and it tells you to talk to em). I just got into a routine in which everytime I got on or off the EH to talk to em. What was more annoying was running around the EH just to talk to each one. Not only that, when you can ask em to make you a grenade or a spike, just have em give you all you can carry rather than asking them ten times.
* graphics/sound. I must say I wasnt overly impressed. The graphics werent bad, but nothing to write home about. The game ran smoothly, except for the rare half second pause for no obvious reason when you hit the Y button the spin your lightsabers. THe textures got old after being in one environment for hours. and seeing the same 10 NPC faces got tiring. And the sound was even less exciting. The music was good, but quickly faded into the background of your mind and you forgot it was there. The sound effects, well how many lightsaber and blaster sounds can there be? They could have at least made it dolby 5.1 since it is a 3D game.
Thats all I can think of at this point, Im sure there are more annoyances I had. SOme RPGs are insane with crappy numbers and formulas you had to think about. This was more of a adventure game with a little RPG thrown in to boot. More or less everyhing RPGish was cosmetic. I couldnt imagine how pissed I would be finding out 40 hours into the game I couldnt continue cuz my computer skill was too low and I couldnt open a door and I couldnt go get T3.
I know I have a lot of gripes... Again, I will say the game was great. The story was excellent. I couldnt stop playing it. One of the better games I have played in a long time.

Re: Great Game, But...
The load time has nothing to do with the game and everything to do with the platform. The levels have a LOT of data in them and are very large. Considering the game is loading from DVD and not a hard drive, you're just have to accept that games this rich are going to take time to load on any current console platform.
A common gripe. I thought it was fun, and playing different, less melee-oriented classes on harder difficulty makes it much harder. Also, not using the auto pause feature makes it far more difficult.Originally posted by finkelmana
* First it was too easy.
Well, what do you want, an Xbox keyboard? I don't think that's a fair criticism.* I got the game for the Xbox, typically I hate RPG on consoled, but everyone said this game was often. Using a controller took me a while to get used to. A keyboard would have made things a lot easier. I suppose the PC version will be better.
I don't think you should be able to just warp all over the place at any given time. This is Star Wars, not Star Trek. And if you think the game is too easy already, then being able to jump back to the Hawk while in the midst of a mission, regenerating your health/force and getting more supplies perhaps, well... That contradicts your point and would make the game even easier.* Movement and load times. The load times on the Xbox made me want to scream. Moving from one area to another (usually with 1 area or more between them) took way too long. Sometimes I went in the wrong direction and had to go back... A jump to another area would have been better (half the time you couldnt even go back to the Ebon Hawk).

That last point is annoying, I'll agree. But the players jog along at a reasonable pace, whenever they don't inexplicably just stop. That's what the Force Speed powers are for.And could you move any slower? It took forever to run across large maps. THen you would try to go to another area and some party member is lagging way behind.
Err, mine was clearly in surround. Maybe you need a new receiver.Or, more annoyingly, a npc locks you into place and you have to swith to them just to move em, so you can switch back and move you. [/cite]
Yeah, that sucks. Most games have the people budge when you run into them.Whoah! Easy, killer. It's abundantly clear you aren't very patient! Then there was the underwater part. I literally was snarling in frustration at moving so slowly.
They're just trying to make the game realistic, to draw you in.
Yeah, there are quite a few bugs. Given the complexity and otherwise high quality of the game, this wouldn't "bug" me--but a couple of the bugs are things that play testers should have caught. I guess there will be patches for for Xbox Live users...* Bugs.I use the shops a whole lot to sell and buy stuff, especially in higher levels, especially when you can get special items on Korriban. Thermal detonators, Dominator gauntlets, adrenal stimulator, etc.* The shops. I more or less never used them. Everything I had in the game I found. Im sure I bought a few non quest items, but the only time I used the shops was only early in the game and I was buying stuff for the hell of it.This is just weird. It explicitly tells you what the skills/feats/stats/powers do. It sounds like you just slopped your way through the game without really trying to get into it. You can really make all kinds of different characters. I won the game the first time with a Scoundrel-Guardian, and combined sneak attack skills with critical hits and double wield to make a devastating warrior. This time, I have a scoundrel I kept at level two until arriving on Dantooine, so that I can have a level 18 Sentinel. And this isn't even getting into Light/Dark. The possibilities are endless.* Character development. I was kind of dumbfounded as to what to pick when leveling. I wasnt sure what to do... I ended up autoleveling all the chars in the game. Worked fine for me.Well, obviously the Jedi are very powerful. Some have said "too" powerful. If I recall, the Jedi in every Star Wars movie I've seen were quite formidable. The first time I won the game, with what became a level 8 scoundrel/12 Jedi, I rarely had any need for a thief character to hack and break in to systems and rooms. What would help here would be a "ranged" script, in which a character maintains distance from melee attackers and shoots at them, similar to the grenadier script. That would make characters like Carth and Canderous worthwhile companions at the upper levels. Once you have Jedi Defense and a lightsaber, ranged combat becomes almost obsolete.* Party Members. I almost always went out with the Jedi. They were far more effective in battle than the others.
...and the cut scenes* Cycling through the text.
Meh.* The map. Very helpful... But it would have been nice to be able to put noted on it to denote where people where standing.
Well, you never went to the stores anyway, right?* Pazaak and swoop racing. Pointless. It was fun to play, but had no bearing on the game. I never had a money issue in the game.
Pazaak sucks, swoop racing is somewhat lame....
Huh? You can really mess some stuff up with force powers, not to mention have fun doing it.* Force powers and feats. I never really used em. Other then cure/heal. Even the stims I didnt use much unless I reloaded a game and knew I was going into battle. I just went through and hacked at everyone with light sabers. Heck even on the NPCs I gave them melee weapons cuz they did more damage.
Why not?* What was the point of the - whatever is was called - press the right analog stick down. Gee, you can look around! Woohoo. After a while the textures all looked the same, the NPCs have the same faces... so why?I don't. That makes perfect sense to me. At least it remains on whatever you last selected in the category.* the menu in the bottom left. I wish the stupid thing would stay on what you just selected, rather then jumpin back to the attack setting.Yeah, that was pretty unrealistic.* The inventory. I never sold anything except easrly in the game to buy the occasoinal quest item. My inventory was full of... well everything.I liked the ending. I don't know which one I got though.* The ending. I went all the way to the light (that was my goal)... so what was the point? I heard the was a way to see the alternate ending...
How about different powers, feats, abilities, skills, stats, gender, alignment...?But there is no way im going to go back thru 40 hours of gameplay just to try some other missions or see some different text or whatever.

True. I think they should restrict when you can save games too, to make it more challenging. Maybe only allow it at a computer terminal or something. That was a cheesy mini-game. More annoying than challenging.* gun turrets on the Ebon Hawk.* Customization and armor/weaps/etc. I fiddle with it, but I never really looked at how it affected anything.
This is another puzzling example of your griping about something but not really using it in the first place. Like "I don't like the stores/attributes/skills/force powers. I never used them." Well, that doesn't make any sense. How would you know?
That's absolutely clueless. The double critical hit/extra critical damage combo is devastating, especially with Master Critical Strike. And the Solari is great against dark Jedi, and the Krayt dragon is excellent too.
I can't believe someone who knows so little about the game has so much to gripe about. Critical threat is the range of numbers on which you will land a critical hit out of the roll of an imaginary d20 die.
17-20 is the best I've seen, which you can get from the aforementioned combination of critical hit crystals.
As for offense and defense, you have to balance these things with other features, like immunity and dexterity bonuses in armor and ion damage, extra damage, to hit bonuses, and other characteristics for weapons. In the case of armor, as a Jedi, if you want to cast certain spells, you can't wear it. The character plots can get annoying. But about the other thing, you're getting inventory for FREE, for crying out loud. Who cares if you gave to work for it a little? For an RPG, they certainly were. Totally unprecedented.
That's what a good score does...

Nomi, if Finkelrama chooses to post his opinions about KotoR, that's fine. You don't have to agree with them, but this thread was created for the purpose of things folks don't enjoy in KotoR. (I created the thread, and I like KotoR just fine.) If you want to attack the criticisms of another KotoR, go start another thread.

Err...
My mistake, I thought this was a discussion forum.

No, you were right about that. Your problem was in thinking that when the title of a thread was, "Things I don't like about KotoR,"it really meant "Arguing With People Who Had Things They Don't Like About KotoR." Sorta misunderstanding that could easily happen. I wanted people to have a place where they could put criticisms without fear of being lambasted. I defined the terms of what I wanted when I started the thread up.

First off....OUCH! Kinda hard on the guy (not you Fable....Nomi)
Though most of his gripes I’m in agreanc with, some of them could have been solved if he read the manual!
1) Warping to areas? if you want to go faster use Knight Speed on your main toon...this doubles your movement rate...if you don’t have it, Bastila will.
2) If you didn’t use the shops then you missed a few nice items that you can’t get anywhere else. Although I found that you don’t need to use them even to sell your "junk", you get all you need to survive in the game off of treasure drops. (Unless you want to load up your toon early in the game with gear that you wouldn’t be getting till your next chapter)
3) Everything was laid out in the manual for skills/feats/stats/powers , take some time to go through it and you might find that you can have more fun trying to customize your toon and the other NPCs then letting the game do it. Though this option was put in the game I’m sure for thoughs people who don’t play RPGs and just wanted a hack and slash game.
4) If you want to stack attacks or not have your cursor move every time you click on a combat option us the X button...they Y button will delete one at a time you stacked options.
5) Jedi’s are powerful!(that is what the Starwars Universe is about) But if you give Canderous with a GenoHaradan Poison Blade and Bacca's Ceremonial Blade and HK-47 a Cassus Fett's Heavy Pistol and a Mandalorian Heavy Pistol.....They rip though the baddies
...Personally I would like to see a Keyboard for the Xbox...I mean why not, with on-line capabilities and talk of having a messaging service with Live I would think that a mouse/keyboard would be inevitable....Im rooting for a cordless all-in-one =)
Hmmmmm looks like Im going the same thing.....Did i mention how much I hated the load times!!! And the Bantha foder, WOW can you say STINKY!!

Yes these were gripes. Like I said, the game was great. And yes I read the manual. But the manual was so brief, I didnt get a feel for going one way or another. Platform based RPGs tend to be watered down a lot.
And yes, a keyboard. The dreamcast and other platforms had them and it made so many more games easier to play. I suppose I could have just waited for the PC version... but why wait.
When i said warp to one location or another, I should have been more specific. How about say, a button that lets you pick a previous location that you have been too.
And yes the load times were extremely long. The areas were not polygon intensive. Actually I was a bit disappointed with it, especially with the trees on Kashyyyk being octagonal. Not only that, the texture maps were not large. I suppose they chose to load all the area information in one shot, rather than on demand.
again, dont get me wrong, these are just suggestions.
