Use some kind of summon spell and then move the cretaure on the altar, this will summon some Demon Knights you'll have to fight and one of them are carrying the belt... simple as that.

I believe you can also have an NPC stand on the altar if you don't have any summoning spells. The NPC won't die, just take some damage. (I don't remember if I've actually tried this.)
Also the creatures summoned from the spider figurine and horn of valhalla will work.

My advice...
1) Cast as many buffs as possible, especially "Remove Fear", "Negative Plane Protection" (IIRC, those demon knights do have a good chance to level drain on a successful strike), and "Stone Skin" for mages/sorcerors. You might also want to go with "Death Ward", because the last time I went through there, I believe one of them did cast "Finger of Death" on one of my NPCs.
2) Keep your mage(s) back, so that they're not caught in the battle frenzy and and can cast some offensive spells like "Magic Missile" and "Melf's Acid Arrow". Try to avoid using area-of-effect spells like fireball, since this may damage your characters and make them worse off health-wise (besides, you're trying to keep them alive). You may also want to spread out your melee characters a little bit, so that some of those demon knights have to move to attack a character, buying your party some time to survive.
3) Focus your melee characters at one or two demons at a time. This will make them drop faster. Less demon knights = more breathing room for your guys, and more breathing room = a better chance of staying alive.
Good Luck.

Re: Bah..
rule of thumb...
undead, fire---sunfire, inc cloud, flame strike...
demons---magic damage...abi dahzims, and skull trap...
a bunch of skull traps at spawn locations for the demon knight does wonders....and be sure to use free action for your fighters, their stun is annoying...

The fight is easy with some cheese prep work. It can be quite nasty without. Gets you a nice sword, too.
