A problem!

Post by Flinc »

I am stuck in the Mind Flayer dungeon. Is there any way to win the guards of the Elder Brain? The Mind Flayers, I mean.. I already won the earlier ones, but my party cannot sleep anymore, 'cause the time is out.. Do the Mind Flayers have a weak spot?
Well, I got bored in that place and restarted from an earlier save, I am about to go visit the Kuo-Toan prince. But I want to get through that MF dungeon!!

i take it you are in the middle of the matron mother's quest?
i always advise that you do the three dungeons before doing to the drow city...so much easier that way.

As for mind flayers, I kill of the umber hulks in the room with a cloudkill then send in mafical swords (which arent affected by the MFs) and we are done. On the last part, with the brain, the swords cant hurt the brain golems so used swords and range weapons to kill off the MFs quickly, then kill the golems with (i think) +2 or more weapons.

There are also a few strategies here

Have you ever heard any more inspiring or logical words? I sure haven't.

"I am a Girl. Think about that."

Okay, I thought about it. Now what? :)

Cloudkill hurts some of the mindflayers as well as the umber hulks. So one thing you can do is sneak in with a Thief or Ranger, open the door, and then let your Mage cast Cloudkill from out of sight, then slam the door shut so the mindflayers can't get out. It's cheesy, but it works.

If you have a Berserker in your party such as Korgan, he's immune to psionic attacks when he's enraged. If you have a Cleric or a Druid, you should cast Chaotic commands. If you're out of spells, there's a room in the compound where you can create brine potions, which will protect you from psionic attacks.

Before you unlocked the main door (the one that requires "godly strength"), you might have created a few control circlets. I don't know if you can create any more after you open that door, but you might want to go back to the room with the slaves in it and see if you can. If you use the control circlets on the Mindflayers, you can make them kill each other. There's a golem inside the compound, and I like to put a control circlet on him. :)

Good luck!

mind flayers are rediculously easy and fun...

best handled with fighter mage....

(this includes IMPROVED mind flayers, the kind some people seem to have the shudders about....)

chaotic commands
improved haste->then-> free action....(this will keep you improve hasted and still free actioned.)
true sight (improved mind flayers have the nasty trick of turning invisible)
protection from magic weapons or chug some int potions...

slice and dice...

now, here are some spoilers on opening the doors in the flayer lair...
spoilers

if you change to slayer form, you can open the doors without using up a mind circlet...

finally, here is my favorite way to deal with mind flayers..

activate g deathblow, then toss in a fireseed...kills them instantly, a whole room full...they just fall down dead like poisoned roaches...ehhehehhehehhehehhe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mind Flayers..

The main vulnerability of mind flayers is that they don't melee very well (crappy AC, weak attack), so deflect or neutralize their mental attacks and they're cake.

So, for the UNimproved Mind Flayers, a horde of skeleton warriors and/or mord swords (even aerial servants or invisible stalkers in a pinch) does pretty well. For improved mind flayers, you need a party member or two in there as well, with improved haste and some reasonably good mind shield. Possibly a cloudkill or two to soften up the hulks (try to protect your party members if they're in there- skels, at least, are immune) and you should be golden.

Greater deathblow is just unsporting ;)
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

You have to really be careful with Mind Flayers no matter what. If they come in melee range of ANY character, they can use their intelligence drain to devestating effects. I remember having Minsc enthralled in his berserker fury, and being taken down by two of those things with their Int drain! He wasn't psychically stunned or anything like that! Anyone ever experience this?

@Flinc, welcome to GB. As you've no doubt realized by now, it's easy to get help, here. Some of the best BG mavens hang out in these pages. :)

A couple of suggestions, if I may, for future reference:

First, when you post a thread seeking information, put a bit about its content in the thread title. "A problem!" usually isn't going to attract the kind of attention that "How do you kill mindflayers?" would. ;)

Second, if you're going to state anything that can be construed as giving away strategy or plot hints, please put a SPOILERS designation in the thread title, or several lines before making a spoiler post. Thanks very much.

As for being a girl: aside from a few early adolescent GB males, I don't think you'll find any evidence of sexism on GB. If you do, let the moderators know. That's what we're here for. That, and the fantastic pay, which includes a private mansion, a yacht, fountains that gush claret, etc. ;)

First, I've found personally found that the berserker fury of Minsc doesn't provide most of the benefits of the berserker fury of a barbarian or berserker. Very frustrating against imprisonment...

Second, to answer your question, I have found that Mind Flayers drain a person by 4 int points per hit so, if Minsc (8 int) gets hit twice, he's dead. Not particularly pleasant. That's one more reason to use Fighter-Mages (or anyone else with high intelligence and excellent fighting skills) against these guys.

I seem to recall that summoned undead work well, too.

nep, of course greater deathblow is unsporting..

however, since i invented it, i sorta have to use it...

:D

try using skeleton warriors hasted and mass invisible...it makes them incredibly more effective...i once got thru the entire dungeon using 5 skellys that way....

sorcs rule...not only can you summon anytime, but with the right spell selection, you can summon the best, swords and skellys, but enhance their fighting ability tenfold... :p

They do!

I usually prefer to do my own dirty work to using summoned creatures.

I did relent the other day, for kicks, and summoned 20 hasted planetars w/globe of blades to deal with the end of TOB (Ascention-Insane). Having lived in Wisconsin 11 years, I do enjoy my cheese. :D

Thanks User!!!

Or you could call on someone like me... I'd be glad to give a nice thrashing to the person in question (which "law enforcers" can't do... sucks to be them)
