its simple...go to Multiplayer - Connect - Protocol - Serial - Create Game, then assign all control to you (it should be by default anyway) and click on the create character boxes to make your party.

simple!

If you then want to play this party in a single player game (avoiding character arbitration), save within the MP game, and go into your BG2 directory, and transfer the saves from "mpsave" to "save" and play it as you would any normal game.

have fun

oh, and welcome to gamebanshee!

Drop/Add Question

If you drop a character that you create, will he/she stay there or go to one of the general meeting places (like Copper Coronet)?

And can you then add other NPCs to your party to gain the quests?

Well...

Normally they'd stay right where they are - I think Baldurdash (Or Ease-of Use?) now includes a patch to send them to the Copper Coronet. So, disband them in a convenient spot (maybe write it in your journal) and you can go recover them at your convenience.
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.
