Level/experience cap...?

Post by Stef »

Oy. Sorry to ask something that may be common knowledge, but is there any way (cheat, patch, ...) to remove (or raise) the level cap? I've gotten about halfway through the game (with the TOSC thingy) and my people are at that 161,000 experience limit, and won't go any further.
Is there a way to fix this? If so, will it affect further use of the characters if exported to BG2?
Thanks kindly, eh! :D

EXP cap remover

I'm pretty sure there's a patch for that somewhere - try Baldurdash or google search if that comes up dry. Regardless of what you do in BG, your character will only have about 80,000 EXP in BG2, unless you use Shadowkeeper or some such (oooh, I was mad about that) - you DO get to recover the golden pantaloons, however ;) .
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

In bg2 when you import you get the same amount of experience as a new character in BG2. I dont know how much, but you start as lvl7 and close to 8 IIRC

If you gave BG1 you will have a cap of 89.000 exp and if you import a save game from BG1 to BG2 that is the amount of exp you will carry over.

If you have BG1+ToSC you have a exp. cap of 161.000 and if you import that savegame into BG2, that is what will be carried over.
So Garazdawy is correct - if you have ToSC and import from that.

(I don't know what happens if you import a save game with less then cap if it will round up, have never tried that maybe I should test it

That would be really hard to do as you really have to struggle not to max out when playing BG1, but using CLUAConsole it should be possible, I think there's a command called setXP or something like that.....

*cough* Gatekeeper *cough*

So it would be rather easy to test.

Seems like I always have to test things like this myself if I want to know the answer. But obviously, I don't mind. :)

I started a new game of Baldur's Gate and rolled up a new Conjurer. Then I saved the game. I didn't move around or do anything; my character had zero experience. Then I closed the game and copied the saved game files to my BG2 directory. I started a new game and imported the Conjurer from the saved game. I could tell right away that she was going to start with 89,000 experience points because I had to select a lot of spells (1st, 2nd, and 3rd level). This proves that when a character from BG1 that has less than 89,000 experience points is imported into BG2, BG2 automatically sets the experience to 89,000 points (and the level, proficiencies, spells, etc. are automatically adjusted--you don't have to level up yourself when the game begins).

Clearly, an imported character isn't "imported" just the way she is; it's more like creating a brand new character with the same stats as a previous character. You still have to select weapon proficiencies, spells, etc. I wanted to make my Conjurer from BG1 a Sorcerer in BG2, but since she was already a specialist Mage, the game wouldn't let me. She did get one extra hit point, though (she had 43 points at 7th Level with CON 16 instead of 42), which goes to show that the importation function has bugs. (Every time I import a character, when the game adjusts the experience level, I either gain hit points or lose hit points.)
