I've only played the game for a couple of hours yet, but loving every minute of it. At first, I was a bit wary of the turn-based combat system, but seeing how much it resembles pen and paper combat, I'm convinced. The combat system is very well made and very original. Two thumbs up to Troika games.
I do have a couple worries though. I have noticed the game manual only features spells up to fifth level. I'm assuming they haven't just left out the higher level spells, so that would mean the game features no lvl 6 spells, right ? Wich would be, imho, a major drawback, since all mage types truly come into their own at hihger levels. Or does this mean that player characters won't reach higher levels than 10 or 11 ? This too would be a major letdown, I feel. And if it doesn't, is it worthwile taking a sorcerer or wizard in the party, as their rising in level does not mean a rise in their combat usefullness. And one last question : how many party members would you recommend ? I've always played rpg's with a party of four, as they tend to rise in level more quickly, and pose more of a challenge, but I'm starting to get the feeling that this just might not cut in this game. Thanks.

Player characters can only reach 10th level, and currently there are problems with the leveling of followers. (The forthcoming patch is supposed to address this.) While it may seem low, it does keep things concentrated and relatively well-balanced.

Not necessarily. It depends on how much experience is allocated for kiling various creatures, and completing various quests.
It should be noted that some people have complained that TOEE is quite short, while others have said it provided more challenge because you might acquire more quests if you replayed with a different alignment. I've seen estimates ranging from 10 hours, to 25 hours.

level & party
you know, it is not that bad you dont get your character to level 10. A party of 6 or 7 members of a lesser level is, to my opinion, a lot more efficient... You get 6-7 chances to be first with your initiative rolls, more spells in a single round, More attacks, etc.
Generally, combat will finish quicker meaning they're less dangerous for you.
My 2 cents.

Does this mean that the spels of wizards will be able to increase higher than the 7 lvl mark once the patch come out? It is going to address this issue? I am not the most experienced player, so this does not affect me right now, but I feel it will be a lot better when it comes out... They seem to be on the ball w/ patches etc. Is this a correct assumption?

Spell level and character level are 2 separate things in ad&d
look for a table... in ToEE, character level is capped to 10.
this means that your spellcasters won't be able to cast spell level above level 5. I even doubt such spells are defined in the game (The baldur gate serie had some on scrolls, or for ennemies, even if your character couldn't cast them).
Look for a table to show you what spells you can cast at a character level. The one thing you want to cast anyway would be a spell level 3 fireball. at spell level five, i'd say a cloudkill.
For magic resistant monsters, you can go with stat enhancing spells or monster summoning (you place a meat shield between you and the monster)
cheers

Actually, the inability to cast high level spells and find really high level artifacts is one of the better things in the game. There's too much of a tendency in games that let you advance an enormous number of levels to simply play "my god is bigger than your god," and strategy goes out the window. In that single respect, I think BG1 is superior to BG2.

@Fable - I had to chime in here - I could not agree more about how the lower level play in TOEE and BGI makes the game more fun and challenging as far as I am concerned.
So many games these days suffer from "Throne of Bhaal Syndrome". For my money I would much rather play the majority of a game at a lower power level and gradually build up my power. The sense of danger and strategy needed to survive make the game fun for me. As much as I loved BGII - I always got bored in the underdark - I made about 24 runs through the game to the underdark levels - but only finished the game once - just to see the ending.
By the time I reach 14th level with my +5 sword of butt kicking and my -18 armor class I have lost all interest.

For a good counterexemple of an addictive game that stay addictive even when you reach really high level, see Torment.
There are way to make a game compelling even when you are soooooo powerful. To start up with, i'd suggest sending worthy opponent to them.
I don't like the idea of finger of death, quivering palm instant death effect, these things fed up player and make them reload the game.
See also how BG ToB got linear once you can teleport in and out of your pocket plane. This kills the mood in the game. They also added feats but this translated in a spell-like power automatical use for each character you control (since you can so easilly rest after). These things are a little bit to menial for a game intended to be "realtime".
Another suggestion for really cool gameplay at high level,
try nethack (http://www.nethack.orgwww.nethack.org). Don't think it's lame because the gfx are ugly. this game is the worst addictive text game I ever played. You have incredible freedom of action. (think about polymorphing in a female dragon to lay eggs, wear gloves to wield a ****atrix a turn to stone foes -- never fall in a pit with a ****atrix, tame a dog, train it to steal stuff in shops etc.) too lazy, try to read the spoilers about the game. No RPG ever came close to that number of features. and the game continue to be interesting when you reach power beyond dream...
