I hate to lose my good cleric, but it seems that my choices are to either have Lareth run away shortly after I enter the temple (and have an empty blue circle represent him until the game crashes). Or, I can follow his instructions and receive what would be a surprise... except that the game becomes 'inconsistent' and stops working.
Anyone have better luck?
Lareth bugs? (spoiler)

You should not let Lareth join your party, regardless of your alignment:
If you are Good, you are obligated to kill him.
If you are Neutral, you know that the power he represents is more destructive than the town of Hommlet can resist.
If you are evil, you know he is a craven opportunist, who will betray you at the drop of a hat (and HE will drop the hat...).
Kill him, loot him, and enjoy the rest of the game.
Pretty simple formula.

Yeah, I agree with The Paladin. I originally took Lareth into my party when he surrendered... it was just so CUTE, the way he begged for his life! "He pled for his life, Mom, can I keep him?" But shortly thereafter, I began to have second thoughts... I was worried that if I rested, I wouldn't wake up again, and also... having played the original module a few decades back.... I knew he was wearing magic armor that I wanted. So my rogue sneak-attacked him, the rest of the party jumped in, and I went to bed a happy elf. Trust me, just kill him... you'll sleep easier.
Hey, after we're done rebuilding Iraq, can we start rebuilding America's public schools?
Yes, but kill him after he tells you where the Temple of Elemental Evil is.
Also, if you let him join your party and then kill him he will not defend himself against attacks.
There is an exception to that my friend...for you see inside of Lareth's "lair" or room there is a dresser in the top right corner. It contains his journal. His journal contains some info about him and it contains info on where the Temple and Nulb (I think ) are. They will automaticaly show up on the world map.

So I offer you respect, and it will take much for you to lose it. But if you do, if you choose to see it as weakness and seize upon your perceived advantage, well...perhaps I'll then let you talk with Guenhwyvar.

... and if you didn't read the journal and go to the money changer (jeweler) in homlet after killing Lareth. He'll tell you where Nulb is. It's an easy thing to find out where the temple is from Nulb. I always sell Lareth's boots off at the trader's in Homllet so I can get the assasin after the party. - yet again a map to the temple.
btw... I agree with the others Lareth is a waste of space. If you're good you'll kill and loot him, if you're neutral you'll kill and loot him and if you're evil .. well need I say it. His whole objective is to destroy you - that's his surprise... besides He's a pretty weak cleric on top of that. Why any party with any insight would take him beguiles me?
--- as I think about it the only evil npc I ever let join the party is Darley I know technically I shouldn't if the party is good but she's just pretty cool. I never keep her too long though. Pick-er-up, drop-er-off, pick-er-up...
