Slow connection with Gamebanshee

Post by Stilgar »

It could be just me,
but when i try to connect to the gamebanshee-site i get a few seconds lag before i connect. I don't have this with other sites (atleast not that i noticed)

Is it me, or the site?

Yep, there's been a bit of lag, and this is attributed to the increase in traffic we've experienced in the last couple of months in our KotOR, ToEE, and Lionheart sites. I'm actually in talks with our hosting provider at the moment to find out how much our monthly fee will increase for a more powerful server.

I've been noticing the difference, too. I used to connect and access different forums here, quickly. Now, the lag is significant.

Yup I noticed this too, but it is also slow cuz the MySQL database is getting larger and larger, which takes a little longer to load.

Of course it is a good thing to increase your site speed at your hosting, but maybe you could delete all non-active members first and see if the speed increases.

There are maybe more then 2000 members that haven't post anything from July or something. I think you could just delete them and see what effect it has.
My experience is that the board will run more smoothly and that way you don't have to buy a larger package from your hosting.

Just my two cents, hopefully you agree :)

I'm glad to see I am not the only one who has noticed the very slow loading speeds in Game Banshee.

I don't know if deleting non-active members is the solution though. Or at least, those members should be contacted before any action is taken. I know several people who are not frequent posters but nonetheless still consider themselves Game Banshee members.

indeed.... can you imagine there's 2541(I just counted them :p ) users who haven't posted once..... of a total of 9,351... that's about 21% of all emmebers that have never posted once and IMO will be very unlikely to post again..... but I doubt that the number of members to the forum is what's killing the site's speed.....

oh and BTW It seems like the load is less today....

EDIT: I take that back... now it slower than ever.....

Heh, heh. I'm glad to see that others have been seeing a lag. I was starting to think that my company had started monitoring my on-line time and that the Big Brother software was slowing things down. Now I don't have to worry about wasting company time! :D

If deleting members would speed things up, I think it should be considered. If Buck thinks about deleting old threads again, I wouldn't mind a little advanced warning, if possible. :)
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

The new server has been purchased and should go online very soon (which will most likely mean that the forums will be unavailable for a day or so during the migration). The number of users in the forum really isn't causing the lag problem, it is mainly caused by the influx of traffic recently. If anything related to the forums is causing a slowdown, the hundreds of thousands of posts would be the culprit, but I'll have to see how the new server handles the traffic before I delete anything.

Keep in mind that even if users have never posted, they may be registered so they can login to the main GameBanshee site and could have even upgraded their account to be a subscriber in order to view the site ad-free. I don't think any member that had paid a subscription fee would be very happy if I deleted their account because they had never posted a message in the forums.

You could sent them an email to ask if they want to maintain their member status and if they don't respond kick them.

But the speed is much better already with this new server.
Gr8 work!!

Speed does seem distinctly approved, agreed.

Yes indeed :) To voice it from a Canadian perspective, the boards are moving like greased... erm... whale leavings on an iceflow! :p :D

Seriously, great job Buck!

Anyone else experienced the lag's again recently? Or is it just my PC that desperatly needs to be formatted and reinstalled again?

Ugh, I hope not. We're now running on a high-end Xeon processor with fully loaded components, and things have been blazing fast for me so far. If anyone else is experiencing problems, though, please let me know!

Since early this afternoon, the speed of access both to the board and navigating through it has been greatly reduced. I've had no other problems accessing frequented sites.

I noticed this as well, but thought it was just my connection. Chances are, it's probably just accumlated bandwidth usage for the site's server, and if that's the case, endure tomorrow, and it should be fine. If it's something else, well, beats me.

Yep, I noticed the same problem. Our traffic is up (30,000 unique visitors/day on average for the past week), but I don't see why this would cause such a slowdown. I've alerted our hosting provider to see if it's something on their end.
