If you take one level of, say, Sorcerer, not only do you get a nice familiar, but due to the way the NWN XP system works, you actually get more XP. :0

Depends on your race. If you're human or half-elf it won't matter.

Also, keep in mind that, Bards also get less, and a different array of, spells then a wizard and sorceror gets. The casting for them work like a sorceror's, in that you get x total a day, and access to all you have chosen, but you're limited to your initial choices.
What are the possible familiars for a sorcerer? Is the familiar they recieve alignment dependent or just random? Is it possible to have both an animal companion a la ranger and a familiar a la sorcerer? Has the empower familiar spell been worked into the game (I assume no)?
You choose your familar at level up, I can't remember the list, but you can see it at level up, if you try to take a arcane magic user level (sorcerer/wizard), and just dosen't accept at the end.
You can have a familar as well as a companion, yes, as they are two different abilities.
You can't empower the summon familar, because it is an abilitiy and not a spell.
I think you can also switch familiars any time you level up.
