Haer'Dalis
Haer'Dalis
Which equipment do you guys suggest for him? And should I go for long swords or katanas?
He can wear the Bladesinger chainmail or elven chainmail armor without losing his spells. The only way to get this before the endgame, however, is to kill Aran Linvail and loot it from his corpse (to do this you must side with Bodhi).

I would suggest replacing Haer'dalis' Chaos Blade, in any case. While it's a +2 short sword, it's special effect (dropping dexterity) is hardly worth a shrug. If you stay with short swords, consider Kundane, the +2 short sword with no speed factor.
Otherwise, I'd go with longswords. There are far more enchanted longswords in the game than katanas, at least, interesting ones.

The Sword of Mask (ToB only), Sword of Backstabbing (Renal Bloodscalp) and Cutthroat (Bodhi's lair) are the three best short swords in the game, in my opinion.
Sorry to say so, but the Short Sword of Backstabbing actually sucks...
Its only a +3 Short Sword with no special abilities at all...
When I take Haer Dhalis along the ride (which is almost everytime), I have him use Katana's....
Celestial Fury and Dak'kon's Zerth Blade (with extra mage spells) are excellent choises for him...
Get some decent fighter buffing mage spells, and voila, Dhalis is whipping the floor with most enemies...

Hmm..
Is there some reason you're restricting his choices to Long swords or Katanas, and excluding, say, axes or spears? Bards are fairly unrestricted in their weapons selection, so you may wish to consider some alternatives, depending on who else is in the party.
If it must be Long swords or Katanas & you don't have another heavy katana user (like Valygar), I'd definitely go katana - either CF/DZ as mentioned above or CF/Sanchuudoku if you have the mod.

True. If the guy is going to be rooted to the spot in one his defensive mojos, you might as well give him two weapons with two magical effects, and full training benefits, as one.

As a blade Haer Dalis is able to specialize ++ in two weapon fighting style, using a spear would negate one of the benefits of the blade kit.

Well, yes but..
I appreciate the utility of the spins and the dual weild skill, but that argument presupposes that he'll only ever be using one melee weapon - not necessarily the best choice - and even if he is, axes, flails, clubs and hammers are all potential choices (mace is too, I suppose, but they're pretty well all lame by comparison with the other choices)
Also, just because a character CAN dual wield effectively doesn't mean they MUST be used exclusively that way - a weapon like impaler (or Carsomyr, which he could eventually swing) is so destrctive it's often well worth dropping the extra swing. There are some real merits to being able to have some flexibility in weapons.
My 2 gold worth..

Re: Hmm..
Well, the kit is called Blade, not Spear or Mace, so I figured giving him something else than a blade would be a bit ridiculous. Thanks for the help, I'm going for Long Swords because there are a lot of cool ones of them.

If you have ToB you should consider using Bastard Swords, there are two very good ones, Foebane+3/+5 and Purifier +4/+5, both are available in SoA if you do Watcher's Keep early (although you'll need a Lawful Good NPC in your party to get the Purifier and Haer'Dalis needs UAI to use it).
There are three kinds of people that no one understands: geniuses, madmen and guys that mumble.
Since a Blade has the same THAC0 as a Thief, which isn't that great, I don't think it makes sense to dual-wield at lower levels (you'll end up missing most of the time). At higher levels, dual-wielding becomes a viable option. You should tailor your strategies to suit your circumstances.
Since you can pnly put one proficiency point in each weapon type, you can eventually put proficiency points into a lot of different weapons, so IMO, the decision isn't really all that critical. Just give him the best weapon you can find, and change it later if you find a better one.
Haer'Dalis is special in one respect (among others): he has more proficiency points than an ordinary Blade (6 at 10th Level instead of just 4), including two proficiency points in Short Sword (the limit is normally one per weapon). That's an incentive to let him use short swords, but if you find, say, a katana that's better than any of your short swords, then short swords lose their advantage, and it might be better to let him wield that special katana.
You could give him Crom Faeyr (which makes ANY character extremely powerful), but I don't think it suits him if you take style into account. So I too prefer to stick with swords and blades. Two of my favorite weapons are the Spectral Brand +4 (a scimitar) and The Answerer +4 (a long sword). Celestial Fury +3 ( a katana) can be obtained much earlier in the game and it too is a pretty good weapon. Again, I don't see why you couldn't replace your weapons with better ones as you go along.
