You can try it, but his level is so high that you can't hurt him.
He simply walks away, so don't bother trying.

You can attack him, and he will unlease a spell upon you that will instantly kill you.

If I remember correctly, different versions of the game yield different results. In other words, I think you could attack Gorion and Elminster in the original unpatched version without getting killed instantly, but if you patched the game, somewhere along the line the "instant-death" result was added. I remember reading about ways to kill Gorion (it wasn't easy), but I never tried it myself because it seemed so stupid.

It was patched due to a crash it caused.
You will meet Elminster a couple of time, and the story doesn't exist if you kill Gorion in Candlekeep.

Remember the bug that existed under certain circumstances with the "Guard the Counsil Quest" so everything was patched.

But sometimes I killed Gorion just to get Imi fried.
