i need help in getting mark the assistant to talk about marrying althea when i talk to him he doesnt want to bother me with his problems

Have you tried going about the quest from the other direction? In my first time trying to play the game I learned about the problem from Althea herself before I talked to the Carpenters. (This time I had to use Diplomacy on him since I haven't talken to Althea yet.)

i tried talking to her first and that didnt work either

I actually talked to his brother first. I think they wanted to be accepted into the town. To do that i talked to the older brother about getting him converted so that he could marry the girl.
