Tanners Shop

I`ve talked to Rose in the Bridge district and got three items for her to smell. She`s pointed me towards the tanner. When I talk to him, he just comes back with a load of backchat.
Without killing him out of hand, I can`t get any further. I know he`s connected with the murders, but how can I progress?

Thanks anyway, but I solved it. I wondered what that piece of elephant hide was for!

Davfra, please indicate in your thread titles that the content will contain spoilers, if you're going to set up a thread like this. The site owner has already put a sticky thread here about the matter after receiving plenty of complaints from new players who don't want information giveaways. Thanks.

I'll change this one, myself. Even the bit about the three items and the hide count as very broad hints.
