Why havn't you seen Kill Bill yet?
It's my new second favorite movie.
The fact that a good number of people actually left the theater not even halfway through the film made me giddy with joy Tarantino can still shock.

I expect fable to come in here any minute now and say it was an overrated piece of garbage and if it didn't have Tarantino's name on it no one would have liked it =)[/color]

so then
an overrated imo = typo tarentino in my opinion ?
That makes no sense. You bring chaos into my disorganized world. I feel like my brain will implode.

It was very interesting, and showed how movies dont have to be like other movies....
There was not very much plot, no love interest, no three-quarters-of-the-way-through crisis resolution (other than the crisis of a hundred crazy samurai yakuza), and very little characterisation...
Also it is partly colour, partly black & white and partly cartoon...AND all the main characters are complete legend stereotypes.
Even the heroine is not a realistic character at all so far - she appears to have no emotions except vengefulness and honour...i.e she is a samurai cliche
The two dimensional mythology style characters are a bit disconcerting (challenging?) in a modern western setting, rather than dressed in leftism samurai garb in ancient Japan...
It was very good, if you can chuck out preconceptions of what you think a film ought to be, and just try to enjoy it...it has superbly witty (minimal) dialogue which is not contrived or arch, sometimes funny, sometimes stupidly funny, sometimes sharp...

Hooray someone agrees with me. For a long time I thought I'd be the only one who'd enjoy the movie.
Seriously though, I completely agree with frogus. If you come in expecting an original plot plus realistic effects and well-suited music you'll be in for a surprise. The effects were way overdone (though I fell oddly satisfied by the tons of squirting blood...), the story-line was overused, and the music was straight out of an old low-budget film. However that was exactly that that made the movie so attractive.
The out-of-place music was strangely into place in the movie and for once the lack of story-line didn't disturb me. I dow... *ahem* bought the soundtrack yesterday and I have to say, it's amazing. Nancy Sinatra does a wonderful job of singing the main song and some songs (like twisted nerve) are downright disturbing.
Now don't go into the tarrantino-is-overrated bandwagon and see the movie already

I also think Tarentino is overrated.
I will however, of course, see teh movie, and I plan on loving it.
His first three movies were great, but he is not the most influencial and certainly not the best filmmaker now working.
BTW, at four films, it's easy to be a genious. But he has to prove himself as not just a two (or three or four) hit wonder.
Spielberg was the same way- he had 4 hits (Duel, Sugarland Express, Jaws and Close encounters), then he made 1941 and was euligizied. And although he made as big a comeback as anyone (Raiders and E.T.), some, like Godard, were not so lucky. He is still trading on his one masterpiece 'Breathless' 40 years later.
I am always sceptical of big debuts, which IMO Tarentino is still riding, 11 years later.
Sorry for the big movie talk- Once I get started.....

Tarantino always has good soundtracks, he obviously has a good sense for that. But I think part of the reason is that he actually has the music in his head when he visualises the scene. (No, I'm not psychic, I've read interviews. ) Whereas other directors might film the scene and then find some music that fits to it, Tarantino already knows what the soundtrack will be - so he films to the rhythm of it.Originally posted by Vicsun

For the record, I thought the movie was great. I think you can almost forgive the lack of a complex plot (and let's face it, a lot of movies these days are so worried about that, they end up with an overlaboured, tedious plot *cough*Matrix sequels*cough*) because we know it's only part one, and apparently the back story will come out in part two. The simplicity is kind of refreshing.
As I think I said in some other thread, IMO it feels like a live-action anime. (Ummm, aside from the anime segment. ) That's due to the kind of things Frogus mentioned. But I don't think that detracts from the movie.
I don't really get why people would leave halfway through... I don't think the gore feels realistic. But then, I'm not exactly squeamish. But as I said to someone at work who said she thought there was too much blood, what do you expect from a Tarantino movie?!
@Obike I don't really count From Dusk Till Dawn as a Tarantino movie... and IMO it is way inferior to his directorial films.
So when does it stop being a big debut and become a consistently impressive career?Posted by Morlock:

I know I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone who disliked Tarantino's former movies, because I think if you don't like his style (and it is prety subjective), you're probably not going to like any of his movies.
Who, me?!?
tarantino - overrated? well, possibly, but he's still bloody good, and pulp fiction owns my boat.
kill bill was wonderfully idiosyncratic. loved it. I would say that some of the violence was pretty strong, but it hardly comes up to the same level as the torture scene in resevoir dogs.
anyway, I don't have much of a problem with violence that is strong or startling. I find it far harder to justify the emotionless mass-murder of so many action films where countless faceless bad guys pop up, die, then disappear, without any impact at all.
basically, it's the oddest, most original and best action film I've seen for a long time.

I liked Reservoir Dogs a lot, but I thought Pulp Fiction was highly overrated and very trivial, actually...but I would really like to see Kill Bill. It's it shown at the Stockholm Film Festival next week, but sold out already, unfortunately, so I will have to wait for a while.
However, there are other younger, contemporary directors that impress me far more than Tarantino...

Aahhh - nice that somebody else feels that way. Although I'd throw Dusk to Dawn into that catagory also - haven't seen Resivor Dogs, so can't comment on that one.

I love tarrentino films, but not kill bill.
It seems that he's collected eveything that's "in" at the moment and made it into a film.
It's the sort of film every want's to see because it the latest "cult" film.
It depents want you want out of a film.
A good "deep" storyline (like "Hana-bi")
or pure bloody entertainment (kill bill)

Well, I saw it, and was dissapointed. This is not a great movie. This is nowhere near as good as Tarentino's first 3.
He likes Martial Arts movies- he wanted to make one of his own. That's all there is to it (aside from a killer soundtrack). It has not an ounce of originality to. It's basicaly a Spaghetti Eastern.
Don't get me wrong- I liked it. I was entertained, I had a good time, and I am looking forward to Volume 2, but that's basicaly it.
I think that because the movie is so review-proof, most people and critics took the easy way out by calling it a great movie, since no one would give a damn if you said it sucks.
I loved the Ennio Morricone music, who is the perfect choice for this- as he immortalised the Spaghetti westerns with his classic scores, now he made a small contribution to Tarentino, who's favorite movie is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
I also loved the Sonny Chiba cameo.
7/10

This isn't the whole movie, that is something you have to take in. what makes quentin so damn great at making movies is what? Dialouge. I've heard thiers like an eigth of the dialouge in the first film as thier is in the second.

Tarantino is pure crap. Lots of bells and whistles, copying, blood and shock and no bloody substance at all.
Wanna see a substancial film (and the complete absence of bells and whistles) go and watch Dogville. The only true masterpiece of the recent filmography.
Gee, that Ubik wacko is still as elegant as an elephant
