I've had Furnok along so far but I can't really find any use for him.
He's useless in combat and I really can't remember when the last time was when I used my thieving skills. Can you finish the game without a thief? Do you really need one?
Do you really need a thief?

Depends upon your style of play. For traps, stealing from merchants, etc? No. But backstabbing can be good. Not fun, not really; much of the pleasure of having a thief is missing from TOEE, as are so many other roleplaying aspects of RPGs, IMO. But a competent thief can still do a ton of damage.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
Hey Globester
I have not added Furnok as a memeber to the party, although he does have a cool sounding voice. I on the other hand, have created a thief using the character creation pool. If u dont like ur current thief u can always make another and add it to the game. U can do this by when in the wenching wealth, there is a guestbook next to the barkeep on the table, clik on it. Now u can make u a thief that has better attributes. By using the Manual as a guide, u can make a relatively decent thief. One of the main attributes to a thief is dexterity. See if u can make this attribute an 18, afterwards see if u can make the strength a 17. Useful and effective. A thief is always good to open those locked treasure chest and gain a magic potion or two for free. Or even sneak to a danked corridor, open a door and catch a hoarde of Ogres unawares

Well personally I'm having great sucess with my Rouge/Fighter, although this time I didn't waste any points into opening locks or disarming traps (As my mages can perform both functions, with the 2nd Level Spell Knock and the 0 Level Spell Open/Close), but am instead pouring all her skill points into Social Skills (And as soon as you are able, craft a Circlet of Persuasion.).
Now, I can hear you ask, why a thief and not a bard? Well the answer is simple, as soon as you are able to take the Feats Combat Experize and Improved Feint. Now as long as you are already in melee combat with a foe that can be Sneak Attacked (Undead aren't supposed to be, or Oozes, Jellys and a few others at least according to the rules.) *ALWAYS* use your Feint first (I assigned it to hotkey 'a', right next to hotkey 'z', for Charge Attack and and 's' for 5 Move Step.) and then follow up with a normal attack that if your Feinting (Which is based off your Bluff Skill.) was sucessful will now be a Sneak Attack and do extra damage. And the best part is that you can do this every round, instead of having to normally wait until the next round.

Thief, no. Sneak attacker, yes.
In PnP, thieves do several things: open locks, sneak attack and disarm traps.
The door opening stuff in ToEE is BROKEN. You're better off with a Sorcerer or Wizard - especially a Wand of Knock.
However, a Fighter/Rogue (especially tipped towards Rogue, e.g. Ftr1/Rog9, Ftr3/Rog7) can be a very good sneak attacker and all around critical person.
Do not neglect the Wizard spell Keen Edge, which improves a weapon's crit range. 17-20x4 on the Great Cleaver... more with Improved Critical... can anyone spell "SPLAT" on a sneak attack?

This was real easy in BG but I can't seem to figure out how it works in TOEE. I've tried coming up behind people but I don't get it happen without any consistancy.
Well, to boil the Sneak Attack rules into one sentence, your foe needs to be Flanked, Flat Footed, or otherwise denied his Dex Bonus to his AC. The easiest way to sneak attack all the time is to Fient at the creature you wish to Sneak Attack before attacking. Now remember that Fient is based off your Bluff skill so be sure to pour points into it if you want to be sucessful. Also, I'd take the two Feats, Combat Experise and Improved Fient as soon as possible, which turns Fient into a Move Action and will allow you to Fient and Attack in the same round provided you do nothing else except a Five Foot Step.
You can try using the thief to sell stuffs I think it can sell at a higher price than other characters
Well actually the prices you can sell items for are directly based off you Appraise Skill, and not class. Personally, I always sell everything with Kelsey, a human Sorceror with Int 17, a Raven Familair, and the feat Skill Focus Appraise. Needles to say except for crafting items or buying everything that Burne has (Which I did shortly after clearing the Moat House.) I don't have a single money worry at at.

I have a rogue in my party. He unlocks chests/doors backstabs/sneak attacks occasionally, scouts unknown areas. Not very useful in combat, there is only one chest (fire node) that needs an extremely high open lock skill but maybe a bard could pick it. You can finish the game without a thief.
