Don't have the time to reproduce my math findings here but I mathematically proved that for a paladin Dual Wielding Foebane and the Purifier yielded greater damage output then Carsomyr. Carsomyr is still the best hands down against casting type mobs because dispel effects still owns and higher magic resistance but against regular mobs the damage output is better with those two bastard swords.

So for beginning paladins I recommend profiencies in this order:

** Two handed style
** Two handed swords
** Bastard sword
*** Two weapon style

According to the strategy guide both Purifier and Carsomyr need Eye of Tyr to be upgraded so you can only upgrade one of them. It was because of that info that caused me to research what the better weapon combo was. I recommend going with Purifier/Foebane combo and upgrading Purifier. Getting the upgraded Foebane is relatively easy and can be done early in Watcher's Keep compared to the other weapons.

what's wrong w/ purifier + shield?

& if you are making the paladin to dual wield, there are much better choices for an off hand weapon than either bastard sword.
(hammers, maces, short shords & scimitar's all pop to mind)

edit - heck even axes ...
