Bastard Swords For Boys - Spoiler

Post by davfra »

Does anyone know if your reputation suffers if you don`t get the promised bastard swords for the boys in Umar Hills? I thought I would be able to buy them in the inn, but you can`t.
I`ve finished the Shadow Lord quest and it`s time to move on but I`ve still not got any swords to give away.
It`s really important to me to keep my reputation at 16 cos the harpers are still after me for killing Galvarey.
Cheers

Nope, you can simply tell them to go play somewhere else.

BTW if the harpers are coming, just let them show what you can ;)
Wouldn't be a problem right?

The boys do give a small hint to where you can buy them.

There are 4 vendors standing in front of the Umar Hills inn.
- One is a dwarven vendor from whom you can buy the ale if you choose to give the boys that.
- One is a woman vendor who has exactly three bastard swords for sale.
- There are two other vendors, one who sells armors I believe but he has nothing of use and another who is a little bit more shady and he sells some books. The shady one is related to another quest. If you want a spoiler on that I'm certain people will tell you.

If it is night these vendors are inside the inn standing around one of the tables, except for that shady type of vendor; he stays outside the inn at night.

As far as I recall the result of the Harper story is not reputation linked... I could be wrong though.

The Harpers will hunt you regardless of reputation, however you can convince one of the groups (the first one I think) not to fight if your reputation is >18.

Thanks for the info. In the end I gave the boys back their money and they were quite happy.
If I have a reputation of 16, I can persuade the Harpers to let things go. I paid money to get my rep back up to this level after turning in to the slayer to sort Balor out. I wasn`t sure if resorting to fighting the Harpers would harm my relationship with Jaheira.

You are mistaken about the Harpers. As I said, you can only convince one of the Harper groups (lead by Meronia) not to fight you if your reputation is high enough.
The later encounters, the last one with Jaheira's former mentor, Dermin, always end in a fight.

I didn't know you could give the kids their money back. But if you do give them the swords and/or ale, the townspeople are angry with you. It doesn't affect your reputation, but it could screw up the stronghold quest if you are a ranger.

i think .. (cant remember exactly) that you are allowed to give them the ale, but not the swords, if i recall later on the boys will get brave and try to attack something that kills them all.

This could be part of the ranger stronghold or it could have even been a script that was removed, but im sure that swords = bad, ale = ok.
