Harper Quest - Spoiler

Post by davfra »

I`m on chapter 3 and am just about to go to the asylum for Imoen. Does anybody know at what stage you see Monteran (I think that`s his name) near the Harpers, who asks you to get his friend Xan out of the Harpers? I wouldn`t worry about it except I believe it has to be done to continue the Jaheira romance.
cheers

It is the other way around: Xan is looking for Montaron. He is standing near the stairs, right below the Sea's Bounty. He will accost you just after you return Renfeld (the fellow who was poisoned by two thugs in one of the ambushes that happen when you are travelling between districts.) If you didn't return him, then Xan won't appear. If you haven't got that quest yet (which is rather strange if you are already in Ch 3) try moving between areas.

Edit: Yes, it is necessary for Jaheira's romance.

The name is Xzar, not Xan.
Xan is the depressive elven mage from BG1 and the BGII tutorial. ;)

Anyway... do what everyone has said and he'll ask you to get his friend out... hes in the bird cage on the second floor You need the harper amulet or else the spectral harpers attack you, go to the bird cage open the door and wave the cursor around till it indicates you can pick up something, you get a bird take it to Xzar and get a suprise!
Afterward you can find Montaron's body in a chest in the Harper's Hold

Have you, in fact, got the Renfeld quest? That should be the 2nd "You have been waylaid... " encounter that you get in Athkatla.

The same thing is happening to me in my new game, Renfeld encounter doesn't show, I've been waylaid several time but I didn't found the guy (although I was expecting to meet him on the first time you go outside Atkalia).
In any case is it possible to ClauConsole Renfeld (or better use SK) to start the quest?

I tried to solve the problem with SK: I got Renfel body but it didn't work (the man at the Harper building doesn't react).
Probably you should change some variables, does anybody knows what to do (if there is a way to solve that)?

Open your game with Shadowkeeper and go into the Global Variables area. There are two possible globals to play with that I can see. One is called HARPERJOB and the other is RENFELDEATH. The RENFELDEATH global in my game is set to the value 2434953 (I've already done the quest so I don't know what is was before that but that shouldn't be to hard to determine by starting a new game and checking the variable value). I don't know how many times this variable changes during this quest. My guess is that there should be perhaps 3 settings - one that means you haven't gotten the body yet, the second that says you've got the body and need to deliver it, and the third that says its been delivered. My guess is that HARPERJOB has to do with the quests you need to do to get inside their HQ (wipe out the two mages in the house, retrieving the bird and giving the bird to Xzar). The global variables should be from 1 to 3 depending which of those were completed.

I managed to find out where I went wrong when I started a new game. When I get those `you have been waylaid` messages, I always go back to a saved game.
This time I was about to do the same thing, when I suddenly realised that this was the Renfeld bit.
On my previous game, I had almost certainly missed it because I re-loaded.

Unluckly an early save (before the encounter) doesn't show a variable Renfeldeath, while in some other saves on later stages do have the variable, but with different value from yours.
What I noticed is a "randomencounters" variable (missing too in an early save) with a value of 3. I'll try to see if setting it to 1 maybe let trigger the encounter again.
If you have any other clue ....
thanks

That sounds like a good plan. If Renfell is the 2nd encounter then I'm guessing you had the encounter but simply missed his body there amongst the carnage. Its also possible that you killed Renfell unwittingly. I did that once when I hit the attackers with an area affect spell (cloudkill probably). That may explain why you have the RENFELDEATH variable in the latter saved game with a value different from mine. Good luck.

Searching on SK I also found a variable "Sprite-renfelddeath 1", meaning that probabli Renfeld spawned and I eventually killed him without noticing (in some encounter I used a coupple of fireballs). I deleted the line and so maybe the second encounter will spawn again.
