What is the point of reputation?

ive always been high reputation back when i beat the game the first time, but i never had evil chars then, now i need that bad reputation but what are the penalties for dropping it? what are the exact effects of reputation?

You can receive a hostile reaction
Items are more expensive

Neutral characters will leave if your reputation will be beneath 3.

You can maintain a reputation of 18 however and each evil character will stay in your party. Just make sure you don't go to 19 or 20.

i have finished i game with korgan and edwin in party with 20 reputation,every time they get out i just realoaded.but i have finished in less than 20 days(at the game)if u like to sleep a lot its not safe.....

It's actually easy to keep your rep from getting too low or too high. SPOILER...

Just turn into the Slayer, and you'll drop two rep points instantly. To raise it, donate sufficiently at any temple.
