Mage enforcers (spoilers)

Mook

When I was doing the Mook quest, during the fight with the baddie, the enforcers turned up just as the baddie was leaving and wiped my party out for illegal use of magic. None of my party had used magic.
I reloaded and the same thing happened again. This time, I ran before they could finish me off.
Next I was ambushed by some muggers and in the middle of the fight, the enforcers turned up again. Nobody was using magic.
What on earth is going on?
I seem to remember that you can buy a license to use magic in town. Is this possible?

certain devices that cast mage spells can trigger the cowles...also i seem to recall certain cleric spells are buggy that way... ;)

I can`t imagine what my team was using could have caused this effect. It`s got to the stage now where I can`t go into the docks area unless it`s daylight. If I do the same thing happens all the time.
I`m sure I read somewhere that you can buy a license to use magic in the towns. I wish I knew where and how.
At the moment, the game`s being spoiled for me.

If you have Keldorn in your party, his sword will trigger the Cowled Enforcers. It is a bug that is fixed by a Baldurdash patch.

If you want to buy the license, go to the Government District. There is a fellow in the Council of Six building that sells them. (I think his name is Corneil, but its been awhile since I have bothered to buy the license.)

However, there is a cheaper way...


SPOILER


A more lucrative method is just to fight the Cowled Enforcers. Eventually they will stop coming. An easy way to do this is go to a lonely spot where you won't affect innocent bystanders. The areas to the SE and NW of Waukeen's Promenade work nicely. Then cast a Cloudkill at your feet. The spell will summon the CWs. As soon as the dialogue ends, turn invisible and run away from the cloud. The CWs will stay there and take damage. You can blast them again from outside of their circle of vision if they don't all die from the first cloud.

This method is pretty cheesy and I usually just fight them one on one after I get out of the Underdark. But if they are giving you trouble early in the game, this way will save you some money.

you can also get in chapter 2 some really nifty and useful scrolls...

i got spell trigger, spell trap, abi dahzim, protection from elements and other really nice spell scrolls... :p :p :p

Many thanks for the help. From that, I now know that it`s Keldorn`s sword. All I have to do (I hope) is not use it in town.
However, the license sounds good.
Money is absolutely no problem. I have Jan in my party with a pickpocket scale of 125!! I`m a regular customer at the thieves guild.
I`m off to the Govt. District.

But the exp of fighting is worth it... plus you get the bonus of knowing that the amazingly powerful and smart wizards don't have the common sense to move out of a simple cloudkill when they realizes they are dying from poison gases

Also you could just plant a bunch of traps at your feet and when teh cowled wizards appear they basically all instantly die

DUAL CLASS thief... then cancel to get you traps back
And yes this would be considered cheating

Mislead (triggers wizards), send decoy away, unload Wand of Cloudkill, wait, gather loot.
