Drinking contest with a Paladin

Post by Rick »

Hell o!

Everytime I give the drinking contest a try my Paladin will fall. It doesn't matter who participates, he falls anyway. Guess it's a "no-go" and that quest with a Paladin in your group.

According to Rules

Well

I tried with my Cleric/Fighter and he won quite easily....
But here might be some considerations...

1.- According to AD&D rules, getting drunk with ale, beer or wine deals subdual damage, thus won´t kill you, yet leaving you uncounscious.

2.- As you may see while taking the drinking contest, every time you drink a blue bar bellow your HP points (red) increases, this ressembles the subdual damage, whenever this blue line catches up with the red, you are KO.

So, try with a PC with high Constitution, because high Con gives you more HP, making it more difficult to drop you down...try a Dwarf (they are excellent for that kind of situations, +2 in Con )....

Hope this helps

Thanks but no. I already tried that myself. The Paladin still falls, becomes a Fallen Paladin. It doesn't matter which character I use.

Drinking contests aren't exactly what Paladins should be doing if you roleplay the character which is why they become fallen. Mind you an anti-paladin...

While it's not necessarily a great thing for a paladin to do, it's far from an act of pure evil. Definitely not a reason to become fallen, even if the paladin himself participates. For him to become Fallen because another party member does is doubly insane.

Bad idea by the game designer in my opinion.

But yeah, unless you think the xp you get is worth the gold you'll spend on getting your paladin atoned, that quest is a no-go.

Ditto! The funny thing is that my thief have been doing some "pick pocket"ing - stole the hat from that NPC monk in Hommlet - and it has not affected the Paladin in any way.
I have already moved on to Nulb at this time.

Yep, this whole game seems to be a 'Paladin trap' .. you can also fall for admitting to the priest on ToEE dungeon L1 that you have killed the snake he wanted you to dispose of.

I'd say you'd probably fall just by taking any of the quests from anyone in the Temple. It's the Temple of Elemental EVIL, for crying out loud. Just draw steel and let the purification begin!

Not suwe I'd agree that taking a neutral quest from an evil character is an evil act.

Ah well .. another bug (clearly) - if you take the lady at the Pirate's Inn out for a walk, you fall .. even if you've not been offered, or accepted, the associated quest.

Someone forgot to check the 'are you on the quest' flag somewhere.

Drop the paladin from the group, do the contest, then invite the paladin again? :P I mean, the little paladin is not likely to have been able to stop the barbarian dorf with 20 constitution to dropping him of group and then get drunk...or trying to get drunk. What can he do, draw blood to prevent someone to get drunk sound more evil then the act of drinking itself... :p

Mostly, their might also be difference according to the God your paladin is devoted.

A God might feel an action make a paladin Fallen and another God might think otherwise...

What is silly in the game is...the Fallen status come from the God himself...how can a silly cleric restore your status to rightheous paladin?

Taking the evil Lareth to show u the way to the temple will fall you as well, so will many others actions hehe.

A paladin of Pelor should not become Fallen to allow his group members to get drunk, but I doubt the programmers make such a difference.
