Which D&D/Forgotten Realms books do any suggest for these subjects?

Post by Galuf the Dwarf »

Well, since Christmas is coming, I thought I might find out which books may help me found out more on these topics. My local Waldenbooks has a fine selection of D&D/Forgotten Realms books, so finding them may not be a problem. I'd just thought I'd solve two problems at once by asking about D&D and FR books in the same topic.

1) Sub-Races. I've heard that the 3rd or 3.5 Edition D&D Monster Manuals may be my best bet, but I wish to make sure. My biggest hopes are to find more in-depth information on Dwarf and Gnome sub-races, and upon any other acceptable and notorized character races.

2) Prestige Classes. I've been interested in finding out much information on ones like Arcane Archer, Blackguard (since I've always wondered about the evil opposite of Paladins), Dwarven Defenders, and many more.

3) Cleric Domains. I've wanted to know more about these after really being introduced to them in the Temple of Elemental Evil game that came out recently. Since I also read about them in the Forgotten Realms "Faiths and Pantheons" book, I've been further intrigued in finding out the specifics about them, especially for the Forgotten Realms portion. D&D books on this will also be welcome. My biggest hope is to find out about the Craft, race (Dwarf, Elf, etc.), and Metal Domains.

I'll add any others that I come up with later. Thank you for your time in advance.

Open Gaming Resource

Here you go, my friend. This is every bit of information needed to understand the basics.

For detailed racial history, you'll have to pick up a realm specific book, but for the basics, the Open Gaming Material is all free, and online. this will give you information on Pretige classes, and Clerical domans (I believe).

The monsters manuals mostly contains ... monsters :D .
There are not to many playable races in there. Perhaps the Forgotten realms book is better for this, but I don't own this one, yet. The MM doesn't contain in-depth information on Dwarf and Gnome sub-races.

The ones you mention are in the Dungeon Master Guide. But every additional book contains prestige classes.
All (I think) Prestige classes can be found in the books specifiek to their class. Example: Tome and blood, for the wizards and sorcerers.

Defenders of the faith is the book about clerics and paladins, like tome and blood is for wizards and sorcerers. There is also a new book, The book of rightious deads (or something like that), this book is about all that is good, my guess is that this includes much about clerics.
The player's handbook (a core book) sums up all basic spells for all domains but is much more then that, so this isn't what you are looking for.

Keep in mind that Aegis's link is about 3ed edition rules, not 3,5 rules.

What about the FR book "Races of Faerun?" Does that cover sub-races?

@Aegis, I love being difficult. :P

@galuf, I think so, but I have to ask a friend of mine who has that book.
IIRC it allows you to create a PC mindflayer and beholder etc.

Found out what I want.

After looking at the Wizards of the Coast website, I decided that two books that would come of great use would be "Races of Faerun" and "Underdark." My hopes are to find out about as many sub-races for Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, and Halflings as possible. I suppose that Underdark will cover Gray Dwarves, Deep Gnomes, Derro (only a guess), Deep Dwarves, and others inhabiting that massive area.

Mr. Waesel: Could that mysterious Halfling sub-race possibly be either Lightfoot or Strongheart? Sub-races for Orcs as well, eh? Interesting.

Yup, those are it :)

Yes, Underdark does. Now i'm wondering wether they are in RoF. Duergar are (along with a new mount), but I'm not sure about Derro.

Excellent. *sounding like a pleased tyrant* :D

By the way, what does RoF stand for? I didn't immediately recognize that, for some reason.

Whatever it is, you might want to do a search on that on the Wizards of the Coast website (which will likely give your information on it, and a sample chapter or two). Either that, or search Amazon.com.

RoF = Races of Faerun? D'oh! *smacks self on the head*

Savage Species was another one that I'd been considering for a while. I heard it had Half-Ogres in it, which had been an intriguing aspect. Besides, anybody can normally have Half-Orcs as personal characters, but why not Half-Ogres? Are they just too wily?

Caution: Please don't spoil any details, in case I do get that book.

Here's another question. Where could I find information about Githyanki and Gitzverai? I was wondering what they're favored class, attribute bonuses, special abilities, and penalties were.

They are in the 3.5 MM, as well as in the 3.0 manual of the planes.
