Using a ranged weapon in melee - any penalties?
Using a ranged weapon in melee - any penalties?
In BG2 you get a - 4 to AC when using a ranged weapon in melee, but I can't find anything similiar in KotOR. Is there one anyway? Seems a bit strange if this should be the case, considering the NPC droids can't use melee weapons (?) and that you have to go by the menues to change weapons (?)...

Not penalties, exactly. A gunslinger will receive an automatic +10 attack bonus versus any opponent in close quarters. However, a meleer will receive the same +10 attack bonus when fighting a gunslinger.
Right, so both will probably hit and as the melee fighter normally does more damage, the ranged fighter will be at a disadvantage.

Well, not necessarily. I think the advantage in a situation like this usually belongs to whoever has the lower base attack bonus. In the early game, it can be useful for a ranged PC to close on an enemy. Later on it'll almost always be the enemy who has the lower BAB, so if they close, then yes, switching to melee becomes ideal in order to keep them at a disadvantage.
