Korgan

Post by davfra »

What a character! He`s only been in my party for five minutes and he`s threatened to take Aerie over his knee and give her a good `lathering` and he told Nalia that she was a milk-sopped spoilt gutless wench!. I was looking up something and forgot to pause the game. He said he`d sooner be in a pub with a pint in his hand than wasting time standing about here.
I think I`m going to enjoy having him along.

And just wait until you hear his euphemistic epithets. Shakespeare had nothing on Korgan when it comes to implying vulgarity without actually using any. :D

Korgan is my second favorite character for dialog in BG2. He's a curious mixture of malice, black melancholy, kindliness, abusiveness, miserliness and gratitude. Of all the characters who encounter your PC, he's the one I'd prefer most to see reused. There are layers within layers on this fictional guy.

He`s my type of person, that`s for sure! Aerie`s vocabulary has extended from `Oh my!` to `eek!`.
He`s fantastic. This is my third time around and I`d never encountered him before.

An interesting fact is that his subquest is in the same place as edwin's, i highly reccomend doing this at least once =).

The only thing you have to do with edwin or kortgan in the party is save often, on a few occasions ive seen him get pissed at NPCs talking to him and end up killing them making the whole area go hostile.

Not to get too spoilerish, but yes, @Galmar, that's part of Korgan's charm. :D I really love the way both he and Minsc can interfere on occasion with your plans, driving the action in one particular direction. And it makes sense. If you're leading a party of talented, strong-minded individuals, you'd expect a little static from the troops.

Sir-Tech's original Jagged Alliance did this, as well. The mercs you could hire had interesting quirks, and would even kill one another at night if you put strongly antagonistic people on your team. Unfortunately, this was dumbed down in its otherwise excellent successor into nothing more than window-dressing.

Spoilerish, pssht

I just had some extremely frustrating things happen with korgan, such as clearing out one entire area, talking to every npc and rearaging all of my items (about 30-40 mins), then suddenly a bad tempered man in red decided somone pushed him a little too far... followed by needing to reload.

Jagged alliance 2 was still very nice however, unfortunatly i got it when it first came out, had so many random crash bugs i ended up getting rid of it... shame really, patches came out and ive never been able to get another copy again, it was pretty neat being able to send flowers to certain people just to provoke responses.

Minsc is my nominee for Most Lovable Character. He's the kinda guy you'd want to have for a favorite uncle--the sort who's like a child himself, all enthusiasm and primary colors. (The tattoo and sword would probably help you get free drinks in a biker bar.)

For sheer dialog, though, my favorite by a longshot is Jan. I'm a big fan of creative tall tales and sly whimsy, both of which are qualities Jan excels in.

I seem to recall that an interaction extender mod exists, but can't find it--something that was intended to provide more instances of interparty dialog. It's surprising more of these haven't appeared, along with scripting elements that enlarge the "self-willed" aspect of your party members. (At the moment, only Korgan and Minsc very occasionally take control away from you-as-leader through their spontaneous actions.) I know there are players whose writing capabilities equal those of the Bioware team.

I agree with Fable entirely. Jan is funny and Minsc is like a dopey uncle who would take you to the movies and spoil you because he would be un able to find a girl himself. He's be like your Dad's embarrassing brother but you love him anyways ;)

NPCs..

Valen (a Weidu MOD NPC) is pretty independent, too - her bloodlust gets her carried away on occasion.

I'd have to agree that Jan has, overall, the best and funniest dialogue - especially when he's making fun of people or trying to steal Boo ;) , but what can match Minsc's demented jocularity? "Feel the burning gaze of my hamster!"

I wouldn't say Minsc is so much dopey (though he certainly isn't the sharpest arrow in the quiver) as barking mad :)

Good gaming!
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

Thanks! Believe it or not, I actually had that downloaded and on my new hard drive, in preparation for a fresh game of BG2 when I got the time. I've just been too busy with reinstalling everything to keep track. :D
