Well try this tactic: ( for me this prolly worked coz all of my party members were level 14 or higher at the time is used it :D )
HASTE all ur partymembers, give 1 of em the Dragons Bane (+3, +6 vs. Dragons), another 1 the Dragonslayer and the Dragon Scale Shield and ATTACK FULL FORCE!!!!!!!!!!!

I invented this tactic coz i grew tired of all the sneaky tactics that were discribed on the internet. I dont say fighting a battle at distance is wrong (all the better actually ;) ), but i longed for an epic battle. Honestly said the dragon fell within 20 seconds  .
Slice, cop, swirl, decaputate and mingulate, it's all in a days work.

It is not the absence of fear that makes a warrior, but its domination.

Here, kitty kitty. Here kitty kitty....Aaaaugh!!

If u dont hit your adversaries while they're down, they might get up again.

Lower magic resistance and then feblemind, tho it will probably take a few tries to work, then ya can just hack it to death without it responding

I never managed to kill the Shadow Dragon without cheese. I think I used a feeblemind or something and got lucky.

Can you always just come back?

@ Duskey...Yes you can come back - as long as the guy is still blue (you haven't attacked yet)

SPOILER:

As a matter of fact you have to come back if you're involved in a romance. If you are planning on sneaking by the second time, don't forget where you put that wardstone! :p

Since you dont have to fight him i just left him until i felt i was strong enough to beat his arse down. I hit him with some spells Horrid Writing - Holy Smite and they seemed to help and i let my hackers do the rest.

Shadow Dragon's breath is "immune" to Negative plane protection so don't waste your time casting it. It is very interesting dragon ability because it draws more exprience levels, if your NPC is making saving throws! It draws 2 levels without save and 4, if you do the save. Also, it continoues draining your levels until your save is failed.
