Henchmen's Items

I've been told that in the later chapters you can't complete the Henchmen Quests unless they 'consider you a friend', and was wondering how does the game decide when you can complete the Quests or not? (In the first chapter I simply hire them and then level them up without actually adventuring with them in order to learn their storys and complete their quests.)

Please note that I'm not above using the Debug Mode in order to convince them that I'm their trusted friend if I otherwise couldn't complete the Quests. (I'd like to do all of them if at all possible.)

The way to get their quests in the latter chapters is to complete their quests in the previous chapters, to the point when they give you an item.
