Bg1 Tutu

Post by Idioteque »

Since there isn't a reference crossroads here like there is for BG2 I thought I would just post and let you know about this mod. BG1 TUTU lets you play BG1 using the BG2 engine if you have both installed. It lets you play BG1 with all the goodies in BG2 like Wild Mage (if you have TOB too), Monk, Sorceror, half-orc, two weapon fighting... I installed it a few days ago and it is sweeeeeeeeeet :D

When you download it from that page it comes with a readme. Basically extract it to your BG2 directory ( Bg1 and BG2 should be in the same directory on mine its C/Program Files/Black Isle/ ) double click the tutu exe and follow the instructions. You can make the other NPCs into kits. I made Imoen a Swashbuckler and Dynaheir a sorceror. Enjoy :D

How about, besides all the race, class, kit and ability additions, 1024*768 resolution?

im sure the extra races might screw up a bit, like when certain NPCs call you "elf" or "dwarf" ect. As for the classes, well seems like a lot of potential problems.

I mean fair enough, using the graphics engine and the newer interface would be nice, but things like dual wielding, the new profiencies and such would be a little too powerfull. (imagine having a certain drow ranger's scimitars dual wielded in bg 1).

Or a sorcerer with the ring of acuity for that matter.

Yes you have to have BG2 fully installed and to start it you have to start BG2 not BG1.

Well I tried it, and while it worked nicely, I still prefer the original version for the dozens of little details that I thought were better than in BG2. Character models were more shapely (compare the slim and sensual BG1 Imoen, to the stocky boy-girl BG2 version), armors looked shinier (they look dull and faded in BG2), the fight animations were nicer in BG, and some of the spell chants sounded better (DUHM for instance). I also liked the equipment and character screen graphics and fonts better in BG.

The big turn-offs for me in BG Tutu were that a lot of the kits and features present in BG2 are simply not balanced for BG. Dual-wielding is for instance far too powerful, and the BG2 walking speed was also not meant for BG. I actually like the fact that it takes my characters their sweet time to explore a wilderness area or cross a town. Overall, I like the relatively calm pace of BG, introducing these overpowered features and almost doubling the walking speed makes it feel too rushed, even if you're doing every single side quest. The main story up till Chapter 4 took me only 2 hours in BGT with a solo dual-wielding fighter. In regular BG I could spend several hours just exploring the Nashkel mines and slowly working my way down to the root of the evil. Also, the so wonderfully eerie and atmospheric music during the narration and dream moments is missing :(

Despite the improved graphics and useful features like the TAB high-lighting and the Quick Load/Rest keyboard commands, I just think this mod removes a part of the old Baldur's Gate feel.

I dont remember if it was this or some other BG forum where I found a thread about pros and cons of BG and BG2.

Anyway,

BG2
-resolution
-kits
-extra stuff

BG
-characters look more real
-better portraits
-better music
-better narrator
-better NPC sounds
-better plot
-exploring more free'

Something like this

Extra stuff like....
- good NPC interaction, something which will be expanded in the BG1 Banterpack though
- romances, romance music was very good in tone with the mood
- forgeing a few items

BG1
- better shield display. they all look alike in BG2
- weapon proficiencies are handled a lot better by grouping them
- better random encounters and world exploration
- a lot of BG1 items that did not return in BG2 were very good
- you start from level 1 so that some level 1 spells are not made obsolete by the immediate availability of level 2, level 3 and level 4 spells.
