Moving saved game to other computer

Post by Astafas »

I have been playing on my mother's computer during Christmas (started a brand new game) and then saved my last saved game file on the MP3 player for transport back home. However, when I start to load the file on my own computer the game crashes... Any advise, please?

Don't use an MP3 player? If the files corrupted I doubt there is much you can do about it.

When saving it to your MP3 player, it probably convertated btis of the file. Chances are, it's lost to you.

I'm afraid I don't get it... I use a player that also works as a portable harddrive (a Jensen of Sweden 128 MB to be more precise). In what way could a harddrive corrupt the file? I have also moved files with this frequently, although not for KotOR (bur for BG2 for example).

I thought that maybe there is some information in the file that demands the it to be opened on the same computer as it was saved? Or on the same computer as the game was first created? I still have the original save on the other computer, I just don't feel like spending more time home at mum's right now. After all, I am 28... :D

How many files did you move? There are five files that comprise the "save game," and if you're missing even one, your game is dead.

MP3 players are not exactly fool-proof portable hard drives. It easily could have tweaked just one bit ... but that bit was critical. In general, though, I haven't a clue as to why it didn't work if you couldn't ... wait a minute! Did you patch the game at your mother's home but not patch the system at yours?

I copied the whole catalogue/saved file with all its content (the five files you mention are all there).

Both computers have the newest patch installed.

I suppose I just have to make another visit back home soon...

A minor suggestion, but if you have WinZip or another compression utility, you might want to zip up the save game files before you move them to your portable HD. A while back, in the halcyon days of the 1990s ( :D ), pretty much everything would get corrupted if they weren't sent/downloaded in zip or rar format.

What a fantastic game!! I finally finished it home at my mum's today, and there will be no more moving files for the rerun.
